Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal jointly launched 500 electric buses, bringing the total number of electric buses in the city to 1,300. During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Kejriwal expressed his joy, congratulating the people of Delhi and thanking LG Vinai Kumar Saxena for his presence. Kejriwal highlighted that Delhi now leads the nation with the highest number of electric buses.
Lieutenant Governor Saxena emphasized the role of these electric buses in curbing pollution in the national capital. He stated, “These 500 buses we have inducted today will help curb pollution. We need to improve the pollution situation in Delhi, and efforts are being made in this direction. More steps will be taken ahead.”
Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot underscored the significant impact of the 500 new electric buses on reducing carbon dioxide levels in the city. With the total number reaching 1,300, Delhi now boasts the highest count of electric buses in any city in the country. Gehlot explained, “One electric bus runs 200 km per day and on an annual basis 70,000 km. According to reports, one CNG bus emits 800 grams of CO2 in the environment. Thousands and lakhs of tonnes of CO2 will be curbed.”
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to address pollution concerns in Delhi. The Supreme Court recently emphasized the need to halt crop residue burning, a major contributor to air quality issues in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). The court urged state governments to take measures to control pollution and expressed the importance of preventing a recurring scenario every winter.
Despite these efforts, the overall air quality in the national capital remains in the ‘very poor’ category, according to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The continuous addition of electric buses reflects Delhi’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
