Gold is ‘Vishnu,’ Fixed Income is ‘Cinderella’ – Lakshmi Iyer’s Market Wisdom
Market Volatility: A Game of Snakes & Ladders
Indian stock markets have been on a wild rollercoaster ride, with the Nifty index swinging between 22,000 and 23,000 over the past two months. According to Lakshmi Iyer, CEO – Investment and Strategy at Kotak Alternate Asset Managers, this turbulent market is playing out like a Bollywood thriller. She aptly calls 2025 the ‘Year of Snakes and Ladders’, where investors might climb up fast but risk sliding down in an instant.
“Picture an investor climbing to 98, convinced they are about to win, only to slip back to 15 or 18. That’s how unpredictable the market is right now,” Iyer remarked at Moneycontrol’s Global Wealth Summit.
The Temptation to Shift Asset Classes
With such uncertainty, many investors feel compelled to jump from one asset class to another. However, Iyer warns against this knee-jerk reaction, cautioning that recency bias often clouds rational investment decisions.
“Just because one asset class is struggling doesn’t mean you should abandon it completely. A balanced approach is crucial,” she explained.
Gold: The ‘Vishnu’ of Portfolios
Gold has been a star performer, offering stability in a volatile market. Iyer describes gold as the ‘Vishnu’ of investments, playing the role of a protector and maintaining balance.
Gold prices have surged in recent months, fueled by global economic uncertainties and inflation concerns. Investors have increasingly turned to the yellow metal as a hedge against market turbulence.
“Gold has been the ‘Student of the Year’ in portfolios, and it may even get a sequel this year and next,” Iyer joked, emphasizing its continued relevance.
Fixed Income: The ‘Cinderella’ of Investments
While gold shines, fixed income investments remain the silent outperformers. Iyer refers to them as the ‘Cinderella’ of the financial world—often overlooked but proving their worth when least expected.
“Fixed income has been the underdog that’s quietly outshining even gold. When market volatility spikes, fixed income investments offer the much-needed stability,” she noted.
Equities: Still the Best Bet for Wealth Growth
Despite market fluctuations, Iyer remains optimistic about equities for long-term wealth creation. However, she stresses the importance of diversification, rather than betting everything on stocks.
“If your goal is to turn Rs 100 into Rs 200, equities are still your best bet. But relying solely on equities is risky,” she said.
Portfolio Strategy: The Right Mix is Key
To navigate this unpredictable market, Iyer recommends a well-diversified portfolio, blending gold, equities, and fixed income assets. She advises investors to:
- Maintain exposure to gold as a hedge against volatility.
- Invest in fixed income instruments for stability and steady returns.
- Continue equity investments for long-term growth potential.
- Avoid emotional decisions and stick to a disciplined investment approach.
With market uncertainties looming large, Iyer’s advice is clear: Don’t chase trends; focus on a balanced investment strategy. Whether it’s the stability of gold, the quiet strength of fixed income, or the wealth-building potential of equities, the right mix is essential for long-term success.
