Ramchet’s journey took a remarkable turn when Rahul Gandhi noticed his craftsmanship and decided to lend a helping hand. In February, Ramchet was invited to 10, Janpath, Delhi, where he had the honor of presenting his handcrafted slippers to Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Taking his support further, Rahul Gandhi arranged for Ramchet to visit Mumbai, where he met Sudheer Rajbhar, a renowned leather businessman and founder of Chamar Studio. This introduction proved to be a game-changer for Ramchet, providing him with valuable insights into scaling his craft into a successful business.
Sharing this milestone on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi posted photos of his meeting with Ramchet on March 6, highlighting his commitment to uplifting artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs.
A New Vision: What Inspired Ramchet?
Ramchet returned to his small shop in Babuganj, Sultanpur, with renewed energy and ambition. Witnessing Rajbhar’s success in creating a globally recognized brand out of traditional leather craftsmanship, Ramchet was deeply inspired.
“There I saw innovative designs for bags and sandals, many of which used wood and rubber. I also made purses and experimented with machine-based designs. Rahul Gandhi and Sudheer Rajbhar appreciated my craftsmanship and motivated me to take my work to the next level,” said Ramchet.
Now, he is passing on his skills to his son and is determined to establish his brand, ‘Ramchet Mochi,’ to make high-quality, handcrafted footwear accessible to a larger audience.
Growth and Expansion: How Has Ramchet’s Business Changed?
Since his meeting with Rahul Gandhi last year, Ramchet’s business has seen significant growth. With newfound confidence, he has set up a machine in a rented space, where he works alongside two to three artisans to produce handcrafted shoes. His son also dedicates a few hours daily to learning the craft, ensuring that the legacy continues.
From earning just Rs 100-150 per day repairing shoes, Ramchet now claims to earn thousands every month, proving that hard work and the right support can change lives.
Rahul Gandhi’s Praise for Sudheer Rajbhar
Rahul Gandhi also took to X to praise Sudheer Rajbhar’s journey, calling it a testament to the potential of India’s Dalit youth.
“Unlike many, Sudheer built his own network, recognizing the skills of Dharavi’s artisans and creating a globally recognized brand. His success shows how traditional craftsmanship and modern entrepreneurship can empower artisans,” he wrote.
The Congress leader hopes that this model of empowerment is replicated across India, helping skilled but underprivileged workers achieve financial independence.
