Gold & Silver Prices Hit Record Highs in Delhi: Here’s Why They’re Surging!

Gold and Silver Prices Skyrocket: Uncertainty, Fed Policy, and Global Trends Fuel Rally

Gold and silver prices have hit fresh record levels in Delhi, surging by Rs 1,300 each on Monday. This sharp rally is driven by strong global market trends, increasing economic uncertainties, and expectations of monetary easing by the US Federal Reserve.

Gold Prices Hit All-Time High in India

According to the All India Sarafa Association, gold of 99.9% purity soared to a record Rs 90,750 per 10 grams, extending its gains for the fourth consecutive session. This marks a sharp increase from its last closing price of Rs 89,450 per 10 grams on Thursday.

Similarly, gold of 99.5% purity also climbed to an all-time high of Rs 90,350 per 10 grams, up from Rs 89,050 per 10 grams in the previous session.

Why Are Gold Prices Rising?

Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, pointed out that multiple factors are fueling this gold rally:

  • Increased Buying by Central Banks: Many central banks across the world are accumulating gold as a hedge against economic instability.
  • Global Economic Uncertainty: Ongoing geopolitical tensions and market volatility have driven investors toward safe-haven assets like gold.
  • US Federal Reserve’s Monetary Policy: With expectations of interest rate cuts by the Fed, investors are flocking to gold as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty.

So far in 2024, gold prices have surged by Rs 11,360 or 14.31%, up from Rs 79,390 per 10 grams on January 1.

Silver Also Joins the Rally

Silver prices followed suit, hitting an all-time high of Rs 1,02,500 per kg, up from Rs 1,01,200 per kg on Thursday. The increasing demand for safe-haven assets and industrial use has contributed to this surge.

Global Gold Prices Breach $3,000 Per Ounce

In the international market, spot gold prices surged by $14.48 to trade at $2,998.90 per ounce, briefly breaching the psychological mark of $3,000 per ounce on Friday. Similarly, Comex gold futures traded higher at $3,007 per ounce, having previously hit a record peak of $3,017.10 per ounce.

What’s Driving Gold Prices Worldwide?

According to Chintan Mehta, CEO of Abans Financial Services Ltd, key factors contributing to gold’s surge in global markets include:

  • US Fed Rate Cuts Expectations: The cooling inflation data has strengthened speculation of further rate cuts, making gold an attractive investment.
  • Geopolitical Tensions: The US’s ongoing strikes against Yemen’s Houthis and rising tensions in the Red Sea have increased demand for safe-haven assets.
  • Strong Institutional Demand: Gold-backed ETFs and hedge funds have seen increased inflows, pushing prices higher.

Impact on Investors and Market Outlook

With gold and silver reaching record highs, Indian investors are weighing their options carefully. While higher prices may dampen physical demand, gold ETFs and sovereign gold bonds could see increased traction.

Experts suggest keeping an eye on key global events, including:

  • US Retail Sales Data: Investors are awaiting fresh economic data to gauge inflation trends.
  • FOMC Meeting: The Federal Reserve’s stance on interest rates could further impact gold prices.
  • Geopolitical Developments: Any escalation in global conflicts could push precious metal prices even higher.

Will Gold Prices Continue to Rise?

While some analysts believe gold may consolidate at these levels, others predict further gains if inflation remains a concern and central banks continue buying gold.

Investment Strategy:

  • If you’re a long-term investor, gold remains a strong hedge against inflation.
  • If you’re looking for short-term gains, tracking global trends and Fed policies is crucial.
  • Consider diversifying with gold ETFs or sovereign gold bonds if physical purchases seem expensive.

The surge in gold and silver prices reflects global economic uncertainty and investor sentiment. Whether you’re an investor or a buyer, staying informed on market trends can help you make better financial decisions.
