Indian Women Take the Lead in Banking and Business: Key Insights from MoSPI’s 2024 Report

India’s progress toward gender equality took center stage with the release of the 26th edition of the “Women and Men in India 2024” report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The data paints an encouraging picture of how Indian women are steadily gaining ground across key sectors—from banking and business to education and employment.

Let’s break down the most powerful highlights from the report.

Women Hold 39.2% of Bank Accounts Nationwide

Rural Women Outpace Urban in Banking Participation

According to MoSPI, 39.2% of all bank accounts in India are held by women, and even more interestingly, this number jumps to 42.2% in rural areas. Women also contribute 39.7% of total bank deposits—a strong signal of growing financial independence and savings power.

While male account holders still outnumber female ones, the gap is narrowing quickly.

DEMAT Accounts See Massive Surge – Women Join the Investment Wave

From March 2021 to November 2024, DEMAT accounts in India jumped from 33.26 million to 143.02 million—a more than 4X increase. This shows growing participation in the stock market, and women are increasingly getting involved.

  • Male DEMAT accounts: 26.59 million (2021) → 115.31 million (2024)

  • Female DEMAT accounts: 6.67 million (2021) → 27.71 million (2024)

The rising numbers show that women are not just saving—they’re investing.

More Female Entrepreneurs Are Running Businesses

Women-Owned Enterprises Are Rising Across Sectors

There’s been a noticeable uptick in female-headed proprietary establishments in key areas like manufacturing, trade, and services during FY22, FY23, and FY24. This shows a growing confidence among women to lead businesses and participate in India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Women Voters Close the Gap – and Even Lead in 2024

India has seen a steady rise in the number of registered voters—from 173.2 million in 1952 to 978 million in 2024. And while male voter turnout was traditionally higher, that trend is changing.

  • Female voter turnout in 2019: 67.2%

  • Female voter turnout in 2024: 65.8%

  • In 2024, women outvoted men in terms of turnout.

This is a key sign that women are taking charge of their political voice and participating more actively in shaping India’s future.

Women in Startups – A Steady Climb in Leadership

Startups with Women Directors Jump 9X Since 2017

Another encouraging sign is the rise in startups with at least one woman director. This number jumped from 1,943 in 2017 to 17,405 in 2024—a ninefold increase.

This reflects not just participation but leadership and influence in India’s fast-growing innovation economy.

Girls in Classrooms – Strong Gender Parity in Education

Enrolment Close to Equal at All Levels

Education remains a key pillar of empowerment, and India is showing strong progress here too. The Gender Parity Index (GPI) at the primary and higher secondary levels has remained consistently high.

While upper primary and elementary levels have seen some fluctuations, overall enrolment numbers show near-equal participation between girls and boys.

Labour Force Participation Is Climbing for Women

One of the most significant metrics in the report is the labour force participation rate (LFPR).

  • 2017-18 LFPR for age 15+: 49.8%

  • 2023-24 LFPR for age 15+: 60.1%

This is a massive jump, indicating that more women are entering and staying in the workforce, contributing to economic activity and household income.

 Why This Report Matters

The “Women and Men in India 2024” report is more than a statistical overview—it’s a reflection of how India’s gender landscape is shifting. While challenges remain, the progress across financial access, business ownership, political participation, education, and employment offers hope.

The data also serves as a vital resource for:

  • Policy-makers, to design gender-sensitive policies

  • Researchers, to understand socioeconomic trends

  • Investors and Entrepreneurs, to identify growth segments

  • Educators and NGOs, to focus efforts where they’re most needed

The Road Ahead – Bridging Gaps and Building Inclusion

India has made visible strides, but true gender parity is still a work in progress. While banking, education, and voting show rising equality, gaps in entrepreneurship, high-level job roles, and wage parity remain.

Continued focus on:

  • Skill development for women

  • Access to affordable credit

  • Mentorship for entrepreneurs

  • Workplace flexibility and safety

…will be key to sustaining and accelerating this progress.

Women in India are not just participating—they’re leading, saving, investing, voting, learning, and building businesses. The data is clear: the future of India’s economy and democracy is increasingly female.
