 What’s Moving the Market Today?

Indian stock markets are set for a cautious start this Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Investors are keeping a close watch on multiple triggers including global market trends, Q4 earnings, and crucial economic data from both China and the US.

Adding to the tension, IndusInd Bank has disclosed a nearly ₹2,000 crore impact from discrepancies in its derivatives portfolio. Meanwhile, markets are also digesting a fresh dip in India’s inflation and volatility around commodity prices.

GIFT Nifty Hints at Weak Opening

At 6:57 AM, GIFT Nifty futures were down 63 points at 23,278, suggesting a sluggish start for domestic markets. After Tuesday’s strong rally, traders may adopt a more cautious tone today amid growing uncertainty in global cues.

Global Markets: Mixed Sentiment in Asia

Asian stocks traded mixed as investors awaited key economic reports:

  • CSI 300 (China): +0.06%

  • Shanghai Composite: Flat with a negative bias

  • Nikkei (Japan): -0.49%

  • ASX 200 (Australia): +0.08%

US Markets Slip on Tariff Worries

Overnight on Wall Street, stocks closed lower due to mounting concerns about fresh US tariffs under former President Donald Trump:

  • Dow Jones: -0.38%

  • S&P 500: -0.17%

  • Nasdaq: -0.05%

The pullback comes as markets brace for possible disruptions in global trade.

Commodity Watch: Gold Shines as Safe Haven

Gold rallied as investors rushed to safety:

  • Spot gold: Up 0.6% to $3,230.18/oz at 1:47 PM ET

Meanwhile, oil prices remained flat early Wednesday as uncertainty around global growth and trade tensions balanced supply-demand expectations.

  • Brent crude: +$0.05 to $64.72/barrel

 Big Economic Events Today

A flurry of high-impact data is scheduled for release across major economies:

 China

  • Q1 GDP growth rate

  • March house price index

  • Industrial production

  • Unemployment rate

United States

  • March retail sales

  • Industrial production

  • Fed Chair Jerome Powell to speak on economic outlook

 European Central Bank

  • Interest rate decision and forward guidance expected

These events could drive big intraday market moves depending on surprises in the data.

India Macro: Inflation Hits 5-Year Low

India’s March retail inflation cooled to 3.34%, well below forecasts of 3.6%. This marks the lowest print since August 2019, offering potential room for the RBI to maintain its growth-supportive stance.

February inflation was 3.61%, according to the government.

Tuesday’s Recap: FIIs Power Market Rally

Markets saw a massive surge on Tuesday:

  • Sensex: +1,578 pts to 76,735

  • Nifty 50: +500 pts to 23,329

This spike was fueled by heavy foreign institutional investor (FII) buying, worth ₹6,065.78 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold ₹1,951.60 crore.

Nifty Outlook: Time to Watch Key Support Levels

According to Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities:

“The Nifty has formed a Hanging Man pattern, indicating potential fatigue after a steep rally. Support is at 23,300, and a fall below this could lead to a correction toward 23,000. Resistance lies at 23,370 and 23,650.”

Also notable, Nifty remains above its 100-day EMA and RSI is entering bullish crossover territory.

Q4 Results: Wipro, Angel One in Focus

Earnings season is heating up:

  • Wipro: Scheduled to report Q4 results today. All eyes will be on its IT services margin, deal wins, and FY26 guidance.

  • Angel One: Also set to release Q4 earnings. Traders will watch client additions, broking revenue, and management commentary.

 IndusInd Bank: Derivatives Shock

IndusInd Bank has revealed a bombshell in its derivatives portfolio:

  • External auditor PwC flagged discrepancies

  • Estimated negative impact: ₹1,979 crore (as of June 30, 2024)

  • The issue relates to complex derivative products held by the private lender

This news could pressure the bank’s stock in today’s session.

 Stocks to Watch Today

 IndusInd Bank

Facing scrutiny over the derivatives disclosure. Stock could react sharply.

 Airtel / Zomato

Bharti Airtel has partnered with Blinkit to deliver SIM cards in 10 minutes – a first in India. This tie-up could boost customer acquisition.

 JSW Steel

Planning a massive ₹50,000 crore investment to create 10 million tonnes per annum of green steel capacity near Mumbai. This move aligns with India’s clean energy goals and manufacturing push.

 What Should Traders Do Today?

  • Stay cautious: After Tuesday’s sharp rally, technical indicators suggest a possible pullback.

  • Watch global cues: China GDP and US retail sales could cause intraday volatility.

  • Track Q4 earnings: Wipro and Angel One results may impact the IT and financial sectors.

  • Monitor IndusInd Bank: Derivatives disclosure could lead to volatility.

Today’s market session could swing either way, as traders weigh a mix of global uncertainties, strong domestic data, and Q4 earnings. The positive FII flows and low inflation are supportive, but Trump-era tariff fears, China GDP surprises, and tech stock earnings could tilt sentiment.
