Copper is the New Gold: Why Anil Agarwal Says India Must Jump on This Mega Opportunity

Vedanta’s Anil Agarwal calls copper the “super metal of the future”, and global moves show he’s not wrong.

Gold Hits Record High, But Eyes Are on Copper

Even as gold prices touched a new all-time high of ₹98,170 per 10 grams in Delhi on Thursday, a much quieter revolution is taking shape in the world of metals—the rise of copper. According to Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, copper is now the “next gold”, thanks to its growing importance in clean energy, electric vehicles, defence, and artificial intelligence.

Agarwal shared a powerful message on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“Copper is the new super metal which is being heavily used in every advanced technology, whether EVs, renewable energy infrastructure, AI or defence equipment.”

Let’s break down what he means—and why it matters for India, investors, and the future of technology.

Why Copper Is Becoming So Valuable

 Powering the Clean Energy Revolution

Copper plays a critical role in renewable energy. Wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicle (EV) batteries all require large amounts of copper to function. As countries worldwide move away from fossil fuels and invest heavily in green energy, copper demand is expected to skyrocket.

 EVs Can’t Run Without It

Every electric car uses up to 80 kg of copper—nearly four times more than a regular car. This makes copper essential for the booming EV market, which is only expected to grow in the coming years.

AI, Defence & Advanced Tech All Need Copper

Modern defence equipment, 5G technology, semiconductors, and even artificial intelligence infrastructure rely heavily on copper for efficient electricity transmission and thermal management. Without it, our high-tech future can’t exist.

 What This Means for India

 A Golden Opportunity for Entrepreneurs

Anil Agarwal believes India must act fast and capitalize on this copper boom. He’s urging young entrepreneurs and investors to consider copper as a strategic business focus.

“A great opportunity for young entrepreneurs and investors. Let’s make it a mission,” Agarwal posted.

India has potential reserves of critical and transition metals but has historically under-invested in their exploration and extraction. Agarwal’s push signals that India can become a global copper hub if it invests in new mining projects and builds advanced smelters.

 Revitalizing India’s Mining Sector

To support growing demand, the world is revamping old copper mines and building new smelters. India will need to scale up infrastructure, streamline approvals, and offer incentives to attract investments in copper mining and refining.

Barrick Gold Shifts to Copper—Name Change Coming!

Backing up Agarwal’s bold claim is a massive shift by one of the world’s biggest gold producers, Barrick Gold Corporation.

The Canada-based firm is proposing to remove “Gold” from its name, rebranding itself as Barrick Mining Corporation.

Here’s why:

  • CEO Mark Bristow wants to focus more on copper projects

  • The company is expanding its Reko Diq copper-gold mine in Pakistan

  • It’s also boosting capacity at Lumwana Copper Mine in Zambia, aiming to make it one of the largest in the world

This is a clear signal that even top gold firms are betting on copper’s future.

Gold Still Shining: Prices Hit ₹98,170 Per 10g

While copper is rising in strategic importance, gold is still a favorite for investors in India.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, gold prices rose by ₹70 on Thursday to reach a new record high of ₹98,170 per 10 grams (99.9% purity). On Wednesday, gold had already jumped by ₹1,650—marking one of its biggest single-day gains.

Meanwhile, gold of 99.5% purity increased by ₹70 to ₹97,720 per 10 grams.

This surge is mainly due to strong global demand and geopolitical tensions, which continue to make gold a safe-haven asset.

Copper Is the Future, Gold Is the Backup

Gold remains important in India’s cultural and financial systems—but copper is where the future lies. As the world transitions to a low-carbon, tech-driven economy, copper will play a key role.

Anil Agarwal’s message is clear: India must not miss this chance. With the right policies, investments, and innovations, India could lead the copper revolution.

So whether you’re a startup founder, an investor, or just someone curious about the future—keep your eye on copper. It might just be the next big thing.
