Reliance Infrastructure officially declared that it had repaid all outstanding loans, making it a zero-debt company as of June 2024. This repayment completed an aggressive deleveraging initiative that the company has pursued over the last few years. Prior to this, RInfra carried significant liabilities—a situation that weighed heavily on its balance sheet and investor confidence.

In a statement to the stock exchanges, the company said:

“Reliance Infrastructure has become debt free after paying off all outstanding loans aggregating ₹3,300 crore. This is a significant milestone in our journey to create a stronger and more agile entity.” (Source: Reliance Infrastructure regulatory filing)

RInfra’s successful debt clearance comes at a time when India’s infrastructure sector is rapidly expanding and the government is pushing for increased private participation in highways, metro, and power projects, which are RInfra’s core domains.

How Did Reliance Infra Pay Off Its Debt?

Industry analysts attribute the company’s deleveraging success to a combination of asset monetization, operational improvements, and strategic divestments. In recent years, RInfra had sold stakes in certain power generation projects and inked deals in the road and airport segments. These steps enabled cash inflow used to systematically retire debt.

Key drivers for debt reduction included:

  • Asset sales in the power and transport infrastructure sectors
  • Strategic partnerships and joint ventures to unlock value
  • Improved operational efficiencies applauded by credit agencies

“It’s an impressive achievement, given the group’s difficult lending environment and past debt overhang,” said Sumit Agarwal, Senior Analyst at Motilal Oswal. “Going debt-free positions RInfra to bid for new projects aggressively.”

While the debt-free announcement was broadly lauded, RInfra’s financial results for the quarter ended March 2024 tempered enthusiasm. The company reported a decline in both revenue and net profit compared to Q4 FY23, reflecting continuing challenges within its operational businesses.

Key Highlights from the Q4 Results

  • Revenue (Q4 FY24): ₹1,890 crore (down from ₹2,070 crore YoY)
  • Net Profit (Q4 FY24): ₹41 crore (down from ₹112 crore YoY)
  • EBITDA Margin: Declined marginally due to rising costs in core sectors

The financial statement attributed weaker earnings to a slowdown in project execution, increased input costs, and delays in payment cycles from government contracts.

“The quarterly performance reflects sector-specific headwinds, but our focus remains on ramping up project execution, ensuring sustained cash flows, and exploring growth opportunities,” a company spokesperson told CNBC-TV18.

Stock Market Reaction: Sharp Drop in Shares

Despite the debt milestone, investors showed caution. Reliance Infrastructure’s shares fell by nearly 6% in intraday trading following the release of Q4 results.

Stock market participants cited worries about the slowdown in core business segments and weak near-term earnings visibility as reasons for the sell-off. Some analysts, however, argued that the correction may be a short-term phenomenon, and the company’s debt-free status could pave the way for rerating of shares in the months ahead.

Industry Perspective and Future Outlook

Reliance Infrastructure’s new debt-free status places the group on firmer financial ground and is expected to help shore up its credibility among lenders and business partners. The company is likely to focus its renewed firepower on bidding for government contracts, and on expanding its footprint in critical infrastructure segments such as energy distribution, highways, and railways.

Kunal Bhatia, Director of Research at Edelweiss, commented:

“A clean balance sheet makes RInfra more competitive and agile. The key will be how fast they can ramp up order book growth and demonstrate improved profitability.”

There are, however, persistent challenges—notably, sluggish demand in some infrastructure segments and competition from asset-light rivals.
