Global Factors Fuel Precious Metals Surge

US Monetary Policy and Dollar Volatility

One of the primary drivers behind the recent surge is uncertainty surrounding the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions. The dollar’s fluctuating value has made non-yielding assets like silver and gold more attractive. Additionally, inflation worries globally are nudging investors toward hard assets.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, silver prices are mirroring gold’s upward trajectory, with Comex silver futures crossing $30/oz—a level not seen since 2013.

“There’s a clear flight to safety happening, with both institutional and retail investors favoring silver as a hedge against currency devaluation and geopolitical unrest,” noted Priya Banerjee, Head of Research at Edelweiss Securities. (Source: Bloomberg, Edelweiss Market Insights, June 2024)

Demand from Industry and Jewellery

India, as one of the world’s largest consumers of silver, witnesses robust demand from both the industrial and jewellery sectors. The solar energy sector—dependent on silver for photovoltaic panels—also remains a significant growth factor. According to the Silver Institute, global industrial demand is projected to increase by 8% this year, with India expected to account for a major share.

Gold Prices Also Rally

The bullish sentiment is not confined to silver; gold futures on MCX are trending above ₹73,000 per 10 grams, tracking gains in international markets. The gold-to-silver ratio—a key metric watched by traders—has narrowed, signaling silver’s relative outperformance.

“The narrowing gold-silver ratio points to silver’s outperformance potential, possibly attracting even more investors,” said Ketan Dhanuka, commodities strategist with Axis Securities.

Short-Term Volatility Expected

Experts caution, however, that the surge could invite short-term corrections. “After scaling such peaks, profit booking cannot be ruled out. Investors should be wary of sharp fluctuations given the geopolitical backdrop,” advised Sheetal Agarwal, Senior Analyst at Angel One.

Broader Impact on the Indian Economy

The rising prices have a dual impact: while they benefit traders and long-term investors, they also put pressure on industries that use silver as a raw material. Jewellery retailers are seeing narrower margins, and manufacturers in the electronics and solar sectors face higher input costs.

“The price surge will eventually be passed on to consumers, which could moderate demand if current trends persist,” said T.R. Shah, president, Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation.

What Lies Ahead for Precious Metals?

Market observers anticipate continued volatility in silver and gold, influenced by international central bank actions, election outcomes in major economies, and ongoing conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. While the near-term outlook is bullish, historical precedents suggest that significant corrections could occur if risk appetite returns to equity markets.

For Indian investors, analysts recommend prudence. “SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) approaches in silver and gold ETFs or sovereign gold bonds can help mitigate timing risks,” said Mohit Mehta, investment advisor at HDFC Securities.
