Market benchmarks opened lower Friday, with both the Nifty50 and the Sensex extending their losses as trading progressed. By mid-morning, the Nifty50 fell below 24,850, while the Sensex tumbled more than 500 points, reflecting widespread caution among investors.
Banking and IT sectors were among the hardest hit, with heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Infosys, and Reliance Industries posting significant declines. The volatility index also edged higher, indicating growing nervousness in the market.
According to traders, a combination of global economic worries and local profit booking led to the downturn. “We’re seeing heavy selling pressure as investors lock in profits at record highs and react to signals from overseas markets,” said Rakesh Singh, Head of Equity Research at a leading Mumbai brokerage.
Key Drivers Behind the Decline
Global Economic Uncertainty
Stock markets worldwide have been on edge amid concerns over potential interest rate hikes by major central banks. Recent hawkish statements from US Federal Reserve officials have reignited fears that rate cuts may not be imminent, dampening investor sentiment in emerging markets like India.
“Global headwinds, including persistent inflation in developed economies and the possibility of a resurgent dollar, are keeping Indian equities under pressure,” said Anita Mehta, Economist at Mumbai School of Economics.
Profit Booking at Record Highs
Indian markets scaled fresh all-time highs earlier this week, with the Nifty50 breaching the 25,000 mark. The rapid ascent led many investors to book profits, especially in sectors that have run up sharply over the past month.
“Given the stretched valuations, some correction was expected,” said Rajiv Bansal, Fund Manager at ValueEdge Asset Management. “Long-term fundamentals remain strong, but we are likely to see heightened volatility in the near term.”
Foreign Institutional Outflows
Provisional data from the National Stock Exchange indicates a net outflow of over ₹1,000 crore by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) on Thursday, further adding to the downward pressure. Many FIIs are reallocating assets amid uncertainty in global bond and equity markets.
Sectoral Performance: Banking, IT & FMCG Suffer
All major sectoral indices contributed to the market decline Friday. The Nifty Bank index traded over 1% lower, while the Nifty IT and FMCG indices shed 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively. Auto stocks briefly resisted the fall, buoyed by reports of strong monthly sales, but later joined the broader downtrend.
Among the top losers on the Nifty50 were Tata Motors, HDFC Life, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Tech Mahindra, each falling between 2-3% during morning trade.
Expert Perspectives and the Road Ahead
Market strategists warn investors to brace for continued volatility as global uncertainties persist. “We recommend that investors focus on quality stocks, maintain adequate liquidity, and avoid leveraged positions during this period,” advised Shreya Sinha, Chief Market Strategist at CapitalWise Securities.
Some analysts see the correction as healthy after the recent bull run. “A pullback at this stage is not surprising, given how far and fast the market has moved. Investors should use this as an opportunity to accumulate fundamentally strong companies at better valuations,” Bansal added.
