After a year of intense negotiations, US and Indian trade officials unveiled a comprehensive package addressing longstanding issues such as agricultural tariffs, digital services taxation, and intellectual property rights. The agreement aims to lower barriers for US exports, particularly in electronics, medical devices, and agricultural goods, while opening American markets to Indian pharmaceuticals, textiles, and information technology services.

“This is a pivotal moment for US-India economic engagement,” said US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo during Thursday’s joint press briefing. “The deal not only creates pathways for new investments but also fortifies global supply chains against future disruptions.” (Source: US Department of Commerce)

Market Sectors Poised for Impact

Technology and IT Services

Technology shares are among those expected to benefit most, with both countries pledging cooperative measures in semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. India, home to global tech giants like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys, can look forward to greater access to US digital infrastructure projects.

“Indian IT firms could unlock an additional $10 billion in revenues over the next three years as a direct result of this agreement,” estimates Ritu Singh, analyst at ICICI Securities.

Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare

India’s pharmaceutical sector—already a major supplier of generic medicines to the United States—anticipates accelerated FDA approvals for new drugs and reduced pricing disputes, which could boost shares of Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, and Cipla.

Manufacturing and Agriculture

The removal of certain retaliatory tariffs will benefit American machinery and farm equipment companies such as Deere & Co., while Indian agricultural exporters gain simplified access to the US market.

What Do Share Investors Need to Watch?

Short-Term Volatility

Historical data shows that announcement of major trade deals often triggers short-term volatility in relevant stock indices. In the past week, major Indian indices, including the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex, saw a 2% uptick, with auto, technology, and pharma stocks outperforming the benchmark. US-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with exposure to India also recorded above-average inflows.

Long-Term Growth Prospects

Market strategists advise focusing on sectors directly tied to increased trade flows. “Companies with proven export capabilities or robust US partnerships are likely to be long-term winners,” says Morgan Stanley equity strategist Rahul Basu. He singles out Larsen & Toubro, Infosys, and Reliance Industries as potential beneficiaries.

Geopolitical and Currency Risks

Investors are cautioned to consider ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and currency fluctuations, especially with elections approaching in both countries in 2024-25. Any setbacks in the implementation phase—such as regulatory disputes or shifting US visa policies—could dampen some of the initial optimism.

Global Context and Competitive Advantages

The US-India pact comes amid a broader global realignment of supply chains, with both countries aiming to reduce dependencies on China. This realignment is particularly evident in critical tech components, rare earth elements, and software capabilities.

“For investors, the deal offers a hedge against potential supply chain interruptions in East Asia and leverages India’s position as a ‘China+1’ destination,” remarks Priya Menon, head of research at Edelweiss Securities.

Investor Strategies: How to Benefit

Diversify Holdings: Include US- and India-listed companies likely to benefit from trade increases, such as tech, pharma, and export-driven firms.

Monitor Policy Developments: Stay alert to updates on implementation, regulatory adjustments, and political developments affecting cross-border trade.

ETFs and Mutual Funds: Consider diversified funds with significant Indian exposure or thematic ETFs that track technology, manufacturing, or consumer sectors.
