HCL Tech Shares Dip Ahead of Q1 Earnings Announcement

HCL Technologies shares fell on Monday morning, before the company’s Q1 FY26 results later today. The stock dropped 1.55% in early trade to ₹1,611.90 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), as investor sentiment remained tepid. This fall erased a small part of the company’s market cap, which now stands at ₹4.39 lakh crore.

Though a slight dip in share price prior to major financial announcements is normal, the overall worry lies in lukewarm earnings expectations, cross-border economic uncertainties, and poor momentum in the IT services space.

Flat Profit Growth Expected in Q1
HCL Tech’s numbers are also expected to be more or less flat, with net profit seen rising marginally by 0.4% year-on-year to ₹4,275.1 crore, from ₹4,257 crore in the same quarter a year ago. Even sequential growth is expected to be soft, as a number of headwinds persist to weigh on the IT industry.

Revenue, however, is expected to increase only 0.3% quarter-on-quarter, said Axis Securities. The weak performance is due to weakness in the services segment — a significant contributor to the firm’s top line. Softness in demand across BFSI (banking, financial services, and insurance) segments, telecom, and retail customers has weighed on HCL Tech’s growth this quarter.

Services Segment: Drag on Performance
HCL Technologies derives most of its revenues from the IT services business, such as infrastructure management, engineering R&D, and business process outsourcing. But analysts noted that customer reluctance in discretionary IT expenditure, delayed ramp-ups of deals, and conservative budgets have saddled performance in the June quarter.

“Services business continues to be under stress, and we anticipate muted growth in most verticals,” stated a note from Axis Securities. “Clients, particularly in the US and Europe, are waiting and watching because of macroeconomic uncertainty and evolving regulatory landscapes.”

Global Headwinds: Tariffs, Trade Tensions, and Softening Demand
A large majority of HCL Tech’s revenues — more than 60% — are from US and European clients. However, both these geographies are experiencing various economic challenges. In the US, the presidential elections that are to be held soon have added policy uncertainty, particularly after ex-US President Donald Trump had suggested new tariffs on Chinese as well as foreign technology services. These protectionist measures would potentially affect the global delivery model of Indian IT companies, including HCL Tech.

In Europe, weak business confidence and inflation fears have minimized fresh deal signings and cooled off ongoing projects. The IT outsourcing cycle, which had previously boomed during the phase of digital acceleration of the pandemic, has now reached a phase of caution and consolidation.

What Analysts Are Watching in Q1
As HCL Tech gears up to announce its numbers, market observers are looking at the following key figures:

Deal Wins: New wins, renewals, and pipeline commentary will be scrutinized. Blockbuster deals, if reported, might provide relief to anxious investors.
Operating Margins: Profitability continues to be a worry as high employee costs, visa bills, and deal pricing pressures act as a drag. Margins should continue in the 18-19% range.
Attrition and Recruitment: With worldwide slowing of recruitment and narrowing margins, analysts will be keenly observing employee headcount direction, lateral recruitment, and attrition levels. A dramatic decline in attrition may indicate stabilizing labor dynamics.
Management Commentary: Investors will want management to comment on FY26 guidance, client spending plans, digital transformation initiatives, and HCLSoftware outlook — the firm’s high-margin product business.
Stock Performance and Industry Sentiment
HCL Tech has so far in 2025 posted modest returns to investors, with the stock mostly keeping pace with the larger Nifty IT index. Yet, a 1.5% decline prior to earnings is being interpreted as a warning sign — particularly when the IT industry is facing margin strain, slowing demand, and questions over global tech spending.

Other large IT companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro too have indicated slowing growth in the latest quarters. Market experts are of the view that Q1 FY26 results season will be more important in establishing the tone for the remainder of the financial year.

What Lies Ahead?
Although long-term demand for digital transformation, AI adoption, and cloud computing is still in place, Indian IT services companies such as HCL Technologies will have to manage short-term volatility. Reducing costs, emphasizing high-margin services, and building up their strength in strategic areas like health care, manufacturing, and cybersecurity might reduce some of the challenges currently faced.

Furthermore, with the world economies continuing to adjust to post-pandemic conditions and shifting trade policies, IT services firms need to demonstrate agility in both implementation and growth. The fortunes of HCL Tech’s shares — and those of the sector, for that matter — will largely ride on future guidance, client deal volumes, and the management’s vision for fueling sustainable growth.

As investors and analysts wait for Q1 results, the expectation is that HCL Tech manages to surpass muted hopes and provide a better picture for the coming quarters. In a high-stakes environment dominated by both domestic constraints and international tensions, execution superiority will be the deciding factor to navigate the tempest.
