In a historic step reflecting India’s increasing profile as a destination for investment, ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company (AMC) has opened its first overseas branch at GIFT City, Gandhinagar. The launch follows the AMC being approved by the regulatory authorities as a Registered Fund Management Entity (Retail) under the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) 2025 Fund Management Regulations, whereupon ICICI Prudential AMC is set to direct offshore money into India’s deepening financial markets.
The new subsidiary at India’s premier International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) is poised to handle a complete range of investment products, such as restricted schemes, retail funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and other products permissible under IFSCA regulations. Leveraging the platform, ICICI Prudential AMC seeks to be a key catalyst between international investors seeking access to India and India’s vibrant investment universe.
The branch was officially opened by Mr. Amar Shah, Chief Business Officer, ICICI Prudential AMC. Addressing the occasion, Mr. Shah emphasized the strategic significance of GIFT City in the AMC’s expansion plans outside India. “Our IFSC branch is a major milestone in our mission to make ICICI Prudential AMC a gateway for foreign investors wishing to invest in India’s growth story,” he said.
ICICI Prudential AMC Chief Financial Officer Naveen Agarwal highlighted the timing of the launch, adding that India is at the threshold of a generational growth opportunity. “This offers a chance for long-term investors to gain exposure to Indian markets,” he added. “India’s growth has been driven by robust demographics, speeding urbanization, a digital-first economy, and widespread policy reform. Through our IFSC branch, we want to offer global investors structured, tax-effective access to these opportunities.”
The launch was also coincidental with the launch of the AMC’s first restricted scheme, specifically created for mobilizing offshore capital. ICICI Prudential AMC is going to launch a host of products under the IFSC canopy, such as equities, fixed income securities, hybrid portfolios, and alternative investment schemes. The restricted schemes, especially, are going to attract institutional and sophisticated investors looking for customized exposure to Indian financial assets.
GIFT City, envisioned as India’s flagship IFSC, is designed strategically to draw cross-border financial inflows and international capital. Situated in the state capital of Gandhinagar in Gujarat, it provides an enabling regulatory environment, tax advantages that are competitive, and state-of-the-art market infrastructure that is at par with the leading financial centers of the world. For fund houses such as ICICI Prudential AMC, GIFT City offers a platform to communicate with international investors in an efficient manner, following international standards while improving operational agility.
Experts argue that the decision by ICICI Prudential AMC follows a larger pattern of Indian asset managers looking to access the world’s liquidity pools. A number of local fund houses have already started using GIFT City as a platform to grow their overseas reach, providing foreign investors with transparent and tax-efficient means of investing in India. By having a foothold in GIFT City, ICICI Prudential becomes part of an increasingly prominent group of Indian financial institutions positioning themselves as conduits for foreign capital flows.
The strategic benefits of functioning out of GIFT City are multiple. First, the IFSC offers tax-neutrality on a range of financial instruments, which can increase return for foreign investors. Second, its regulatory framework is aligned to international best practices, and it provides relief to foreign institutions on compliance and governance concerns. Third, GIFT City’s state-of-the-art market infrastructure, such as trading, clearing, and settlement systems, provides effective management of funds and operational scalability.
For ICICI Prudential AMC, the IFSC branch is not only a portal to foreign investors but also an enabler of product innovation. The capacity of the branch to introduce restricted schemes and other overseas funds will enable the AMC to test out diversified investment options specific to offshore capital. In the long run, this can help widen the investor pool for Indian financial products while at the same time inducing long-term foreign investment into the domestic economy.
Market watchers feel that such efforts could be instrumental in deepening India’s capital market. As international investors get more organized and compliant access to Indian equities, fixed income, and hybrid securities, the flow of foreign capital is expected to add to market liquidity and overall build-up of financial infrastructure. In this regard, ICICI Prudential AMC’s venture into GIFT City could be an example for other fund managers to follow in their push to go global.
Besides enabling capital flows, the IFSC branch also places ICICI Prudential AMC in an advantageous position to become more skilled in research and better connect with the world. Through dealings with global investors, the AMC can learn about international market trends, investor sentiments, and evolving investment themes. This information can be interpreted to become even more sophisticated investment strategies for both domestic and offshore clients, further establishing the competitive advantage of the AMC.
The opening of our GIFT City branch reaffirms our vision for building a global gateway for investors to join the Indian growth story,” Naveen Agarwal said. “It is a move towards consolidating India’s financial ecosystem with the world’s capital markets, providing institutional and retail investors alike with a hassle-free platform to access opportunity in a fast-changing economy.
As foreign investment keeps pouring in for India, moves such as ICICI Prudential AMC’s IFSC branch pave the way for a new chapter in India’s financial services sector. By tapping into the strategic benefits of GIFT City, the AMC stands to intensify its interaction with international capital, offer cutting-edge investment solutions, and become a key driver of India’s financial growth story. With strong policy backing, strong macroeconomic fundamentals, and a growing investor base, the prognosis for India’s IFSCs is bright, and ICICI Prudential AMC is ready to take the lead.
