China’s artificial intelligence sector reached a major milestone this week as Zhipu, one of the country’s leading large language model (LLM) developers, made its public market debut in Hong Kong. The listing makes Zhipu the first of China’s so-called “AI tigers” to go public, marking a significant moment in Beijing’s push to build globally competitive AI champions.

Shares of Knowledge Atlas Technology JSC, better known as Zhipu, rose about 10% above their offer price on their first day of trading, signaling strong investor interest despite geopolitical headwinds and tightening U.S. technology restrictions.

The initial public offering raised $558 million, valuing the Beijing-based startup at approximately HK$4.3 billion, one of the largest AI-focused IPOs in recent years.

Strong Market Debut Highlights Investor Confidence

Shares Climb on First Day of Trading

Zhipu’s shares were priced at HK$116.20 ($15) and edged higher during Thursday’s trading session, with about 37.4 million shares offered to investors. The positive debut reflects confidence in the company’s growth prospects and the broader potential of China’s AI industry.

The listing comes at a time when global investors are closely watching Chinese technology stocks, particularly those linked to strategic industries such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

One of the Largest AI IPOs in Recent Years

With a valuation of around HK$4.3 billion, Zhipu’s flotation stands out among recent AI listings. While the global IPO market for technology companies has been subdued, the successful debut underscores sustained interest in firms positioned at the center of the AI race.

Zhipu’s Rise as a Leading Chinese LLM Developer

Founded by Top Academic Talent

Zhipu was founded in 2019 by researchers from one of China’s top universities, reflecting the country’s emphasis on leveraging academic expertise to drive technological innovation. Since its founding, the company has focused on building large language models capable of competing with leading Western systems.

Its rapid development has made it China’s first major LLM company to go public, a landmark achievement for the domestic AI ecosystem.

Part of China’s “AI Tigers”

Zhipu is widely regarded as one of China’s “AI tigers,” a group of elite startups developing foundational AI models intended to rival U.S.-based leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Other companies in this group include DeepSeek, which gained global attention early last year after releasing an LLM that briefly unsettled financial markets and challenged assumptions about China’s AI capabilities.

Beijing’s Backing and Strategic Importance

Strong Government Support

Zhipu is strongly backed by Beijing and is seen as a strategically important company within China’s broader AI ambitions. As artificial intelligence becomes a central pillar of economic growth, national security, and industrial competitiveness, firms like Zhipu are receiving policy support and funding to accelerate development.

This backing has helped the company scale rapidly despite external constraints.

A Key Player in China’s AI Push

The IPO represents another step forward for China’s AI sector, following a wave of recent listings by AI chipmakers and other advanced technology firms. Together, these developments highlight Beijing’s determination to build a self-sufficient AI ecosystem in the face of growing technological decoupling from the United States.

Global Presence and Overseas Expansion

Operations Beyond China

Although Zhipu is headquartered in Beijing, the company has expanded its footprint internationally. It reportedly operates offices in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, and across the Middle East.

The firm has also established joint “innovation center” projects throughout Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia and Vietnam, signaling its ambition to become a global AI player rather than a purely domestic one.

Competing on the International Stage

While Zhipu is not yet as widely known internationally as some Western or Chinese rivals, its growing overseas presence suggests a long-term strategy to serve global clients and partners, particularly in emerging markets receptive to Chinese technology.

Recognition as a Serious Competitor

Mentioned by OpenAI as a Rising Rival

Zhipu drew international attention last year when OpenAI publicly highlighted the company’s progress, describing it as being on the “front line” of China’s race to lead in artificial intelligence.

Such recognition from an American AI giant underscored Zhipu’s technical advancements and its potential to challenge U.S. dominance in large language models.

Not as Famous as DeepSeek—Yet

While DeepSeek has gained more global recognition, Zhipu’s steady progress and institutional backing have positioned it as a quieter but formidable competitor within China’s AI landscape.

Challenges from U.S. Restrictions

Added to the U.S. Entity List

Zhipu’s rise has not been without obstacles. In January last year, the company was placed on the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List, after U.S. officials alleged it was working with China’s military.

The designation restricts American companies from supplying Zhipu with certain technologies without special licenses, complicating its access to advanced hardware and expertise.

Limited Access to Advanced Semiconductors

Like many Chinese AI firms, Zhipu faces constraints due to U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductor chips and manufacturing equipment. These restrictions have made it more difficult and costly to train cutting-edge AI models.

Despite these challenges, the company has continued to advance its technology, highlighting China’s growing ability to innovate under pressure.

What Zhipu’s IPO Means for China’s AI Sector

A Symbolic Breakthrough

Zhipu’s successful listing is widely seen as a symbolic breakthrough for China’s AI industry. It demonstrates that Chinese LLM developers can reach public markets, attract investor interest, and scale despite geopolitical tensions.

More AI Listings Likely Ahead

Analysts expect Zhipu’s IPO to pave the way for other Chinese AI startups to consider public listings, particularly those aligned with national priorities such as AI, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.

Outlook: A New Phase for China’s AI Champions

Zhipu’s Hong Kong debut marks the beginning of a new chapter—not only for the company but for China’s artificial intelligence ambitions as a whole. As the first of the “AI tigers” to go public, Zhipu has set a precedent for how Chinese LLM developers can raise capital, expand globally, and compete on the world stage.

While challenges from U.S. restrictions and intense global competition remain, Zhipu’s strong debut signals that investors believe China’s AI story is far from over. As the race to dominate artificial intelligence accelerates, Zhipu is now firmly in the spotlight as one of China’s most closely watched AI contenders.
