Growing Global Competition and Price Pressures

Over the past year, solar manufacturers worldwide have experienced tightening profit margins. A global supply glut, particularly with cheaper modules being shipped from China, has intensified competition.

“Waaree and Premier Energies have been under pressure due to falling module prices globally. Chinese imports have pushed prices down, squeezing local manufacturers’ margins,” said Rakesh Goyal, energy analyst at Mumbai-based Noor Investments.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global solar module prices are down nearly 25% year-over-year, the steepest decline in a decade. This trend has forced Indian manufacturers to cut prices or risk losing market share.

Policy Shifts and Import Dependency Add Uncertainty

Indian policymakers have attempted to support local solar manufacturing through tariffs and production-linked incentives, but these moves have met with mixed results.

“While the government’s push to build a domestic solar supply chain is commendable, any sudden changes in tariffs or incentives can catch the industry off guard,” said Neha Joshi, policy analyst at CEEW (Council on Energy, Environment and Water).

With the government set to review import duties next quarter, investors fear policy uncertainty could undercut the stability needed for major capital investments.

Oversupply Fears as Demand Faces Headwinds

Although India’s renewable energy targets remain ambitious—aiming for 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030—the pace of new solar project commissioning has slowed. Factors include policy delays, land acquisition hurdles, and financing constraints.

Current industry data shows domestic module manufacturing capacity has surged over the past two years, thanks to government incentives. However, slower-than-anticipated project uptake may leave manufacturers with excess inventory and further price pressure.

Stock Performance and Investor Sentiment

Waaree Energies’ stock closed the day down 9.7% at ₹468, marking its largest one-day fall in six months. Premier Energies dropped 5.2% to ₹232, finishing near its lowest level since March.

“The Indian solar sector remains fundamentally strong for the long term,” noted Shailesh Kumar, fund manager at SunFinance Capital, “but short-term turbulence is likely as companies adjust to fast-moving global dynamics.”

Market watchers caution that profitability concerns and competitive pressures could persist, suggesting further volatility for listed solar firms.

Market Outlook: Is the Solar Sector’s Growth Story at Risk?

While some analysts remain hopeful, citing India’s strong renewables policy support and anticipated rebound in project execution, most agree that the near-term outlook is clouded by uncertainties.

“There’s clear long-term potential given India’s energy needs,” said Meera Kapoor, energy investing columnist for Mint. “But today’s correction reflects growing concerns about how domestic manufacturers will compete in an increasingly globalized solar sector.”
