The Nifty 50—a major benchmark for Indian equity markets—closed last week below critical technical support points, raising concerns among traders and market analysts. After encountering sharp swings due to a combination of profit booking and global uncertainties, the index has entered a consolidation to negative phase.

“Given the recent price action and weakness across sectors, we recommend a Sell on Rise strategy for the Nifty in the coming week. Important support at the 22,300-22,400 range has been breached, which could invite further selling pressure,” said Ajit Mishra, SVP – Technical Research at Religare Broking, in a note to clients. “Investors should remain cautious and avoid aggressive long positions until clear signs of recovery emerge.”

Technical Analysis: Key Levels to Watch

Religare Broking’s report highlights several technical indicators suggesting a negative short-term outlook for Nifty:

  • Immediate Resistance: Nifty faces resistance near the 23,150-23,200 band. Any upward move toward these levels may trigger fresh selling.
  • Downside Targets: Should weakness continue, the next key support levels are seen at 22,000 and 21,850, raising the possibility of a further slide if these are breached.
  • Bearish Momentum: “Momentum oscillators continue to signal bearishness, reflecting waning breadth in the index,” the Religare note explained.

Broader Market Sentiment Stays Cautious

The bearish technical setup coincides with cautious undertones prevailing in the broader Indian equity market. Key factors influencing sentiment include:

  • Global Headwinds: Concerns about US Federal Reserve rate decisions and ongoing geopolitical risks weigh on market confidence.
  • Political Factors: Recent election results and subsequent portfolio realignments among foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have increased volatility.
  • Sectoral Weakness: Weakness persists in sectors such as FMCG and IT, with only select stocks bucking the negative trend.

“In the current setup, traders should look for selective shorts in sectors showing relative underperformance while keeping strict stop-losses,” said Mehul Kothari, AVP – Technical Research at AnandRathi Shares, in a separate commentary.

Expert Perspectives on Trading Strategies

Multiple market experts echo the cautious tone. “Over the next week, a defensive stance is prudent. Banks, auto, and large-cap IT stocks could see further pressure, making sectoral rotation vital for risk management,” observed Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical & Derivative Research at SBI Securities.

Meanwhile, some technical analysts recommend using any relief rally to trim positions. “Any upmove closer to resistance levels offers an opportunity to exit or initiate short trades, aligning with the ‘Sell on Rise’ narrative,” added the Religare Broking report.

Key Data and Comparative Indices

  • Nifty Last Close: 22,900.15 (down 1.2% for the week)
  • Sensex Performance: 75,250.85 (down 1.4% for the week)
  • FII Activity: Net outflow of ₹2,340 crore last week, according to NSDL data.
  • Volatility Index (India VIX): Hovered around 15.3, reflecting rising nervousness among traders.

What Could Change the Trend?

While the short-term outlook appears pessimistic, certain triggers could alter market direction:

  • Positive Global Cues: A dovish Fed policy or easing of geopolitical tensions may boost risk appetite.
  • Strong Domestic Data: Better-than-expected macroeconomic data or robust corporate earnings could lend support.
  • Institutional Buying: Renewed FII or domestic institutional investor (DII) buying at lower levels can help stabilize the market.
