A federal jury in San Francisco convicted Linwei Ding, also known as Leon Ding, on multiple charges related to economic espionage and theft of trade secrets. The verdict marks the first successful U.S. conviction involving AI-focused economic espionage, according to the Department of Justice.

Who Is Linwei Ding?

Linwei Ding is a 38-year-old former software engineer who worked at Google, one of the world’s leading companies in artificial intelligence research and development.

While employed at the company, Ding had access to highly confidential internal materials related to Google’s AI systems. Prosecutors argued that instead of protecting that information, he secretly copied and stored it for unauthorized use.
