Indian automotive giant Mahindra and Mahindra announced on Wednesday a substantial investment of 8.75 billion rupees ($105 million) in its two-wheeler unit, Classic Legends, over the next two to three years. The company, renowned for its ‘Scorpio’ car model, will contribute 5.25 billion rupees, with the remaining investment sourced from both existing shareholders and new investors, according to an official filing with the stock exchange.
Classic Legends, a subsidiary in which Mahindra holds a 60% stake, specializes in the manufacturing of two-wheelers, including iconic brands such as Jawa, Yezdi, and BSA. The specifics of the additional investors involved in the funding round are yet to be disclosed.
This investment initiative comes at a pivotal moment in the Indian premium motorcycle market, which is witnessing increased competition from aggressively priced models introduced by international players like Harley-Davidson and Triumph. These global brands are establishing strategic partnerships with domestic entities such as Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto.
Despite the revival of heritage brands like Yezdi and Jawa under the Classic Legends banner, the company has faced challenges in gaining significant traction in the premium motorcycle segment. This market is currently dominated by Eicher Motor’s Royal Enfield.
Mahindra stated that the infusion of funds into Classic Legends will be directed towards establishing a robust presence in the rapidly expanding premium motorcycle segment in India. The company, however, did not provide specific details on how the investment will be utilized.
The dynamics of the premium motorcycle sector in India are evolving, with consumers increasingly drawn to iconic and heritage brands. Mahindra’s strategic investment in Classic Legends reflects its commitment to tapping into this growing market segment and enhancing its position in the competitive two-wheeler industry.
As the investment unfolds over the next few years, industry observers will keenly watch how Classic Legends leverages these funds to strengthen its product offerings, expand market reach, and compete effectively in the premium motorcycle space against formidable rivals like Royal Enfield.
