Tesla’s Bitcoin Holdings Soar with New Accounting Rules
Tesla has announced a massive $600 million paper gain from its Bitcoin holdings in Q4 2024. This surge is thanks to updated financial rules that let companies adjust the value of their digital assets based on current market prices every quarter.
Before these new regulations, Tesla had to wait until it sold the Bitcoin to calculate gains or losses. Now, the company can adjust the value of its Bitcoin each quarter—leading to a huge leap in its digital asset portfolio, which grew to about $1.076 billion by the end of Q4. This is a massive jump from just $184 million the previous quarter.
Bitcoin Prices Surge, Boosting Tesla’s Crypto Portfolio
The sharp rise in Tesla’s Bitcoin value also mirrors the surge in Bitcoin prices, which shot up more than 50% during the quarter. A mix of factors contributed to the Bitcoin boom, including Donald Trump’s reelection as U.S. President and an uptick in Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s price stands at $105,303, up 2.88% in the past 24 hours, contributing to Tesla’s paper gain. While Tesla hasn’t disclosed its exact Bitcoin holdings in its Q4 report, analysts at Arkham Intelligence estimate the company holds around 11,509 BTC, worth an impressive $1.21 billion.
This puts Tesla in the top four largest publicly traded Bitcoin holders, behind MicroStrategy, Marathon Digital, and Galaxy Digital.
Tesla’s Strong Financials and Future Outlook
Despite a slight drop in Tesla’s stock price by 2.26% to $389.10 on Wednesday, the company bounced back with a 4.15% increase in after-hours trading. For the fourth quarter, Tesla reported a net income of $2.3 billion, contributing to a total net income of $7.1 billion for the year. However, its adjusted earnings per share came in slightly lower than expected at $0.73, below the predicted $0.76.
The Road Ahead for Tesla’s Crypto Strategy
Tesla’s bold embrace of Bitcoin continues to pay off under new financial rules. With the company holding over a billion dollars in digital assets, it seems poised to ride the wave of cryptocurrency growth in the future. As Bitcoin’s popularity and value rise, Tesla’s crypto investments may play an even bigger role in its long-term success.
