Biryani continues to reign supreme as the most ordered dish on Swiggy in 2023, maintaining its top position for the eighth consecutive year. According to a report released by the food delivery platform, India witnessed a staggering rate of 2.5 biryanis ordered per second throughout the year. The data, compiled between January 1 and November 23, revealed that for every 5.5 chicken biryanis, one vegetarian biryani was ordered. On January 1 alone, a remarkable 430,000 biryanis were ordered via the platform.
The report, titled “How India Swiggy’d 2023 – Unwrapping India’s Year in On-Demand Convenience,” highlighted that 2.49 million customers made their debut on Swiggy with a biryani order. Hyderabad emerged as the city with the greatest appetite for biryani, accounting for every sixth biryani delivered.
During the World Cup 2023 finals on November 19, India witnessed a surge in pizza orders, reaching a rate of 188 pizzas per minute.
The report also disclosed that user accounts in Chennai, Delhi, and Hyderabad led in the number of orders, each surpassing 10,000 orders. The highest expenditure, by value, came from a Mumbai user who placed orders worth Rs 42.3 lakh.
On the occasion of Durga Pujo, Gulab Jamuns surpassed Roshogollas with over 7.7 million orders. Masala Dosa claimed the top spot in vegetarian orders during all nine days of Navaratri.
Bangalore earned the title of the “Cake Capital” of the country, with 8.5 million orders placed for chocolate cake alone. Mother’s Day (May 14) saw the highest number of chocolate cake orders.
The report also delved into data for Swiggy’s quick commerce vertical, Swiggy Instamart. Milk emerged as the most searched item on the platform, followed by curd and onions. The report humorously noted that if all Swiggy Instamart users from the top five cities were grouped together, it would be the 17th most populated country globally, aptly named “Insta-pur.”
The single highest order on Swiggy Instamart amounted to Rs 31,748 from a user in Chennai, including coffee, juice, cookies, nachos, and chips. The largest order, by volume, was placed by a user from Jaipur, who made 67 orders on Swiggy Instamart in a single day. The fastest delivery was achieved in Delhi, where Swiggy Instamart delivered a packet of instant noodles in just 65 seconds.
Swiggy’s delivery partners covered an impressive 166.42 million km using electric vehicles (EVs) and cycles, showcasing the platform’s commitment to sustainable practices.
