Maruti Suzuki, the country’s leading automaker, is gearing up to introduce its inaugural electric car, the eVX, to the Indian market by March 2025, as reported by Autocar India (ACI). The eVX will also have a Toyota variant, following the pattern of Glanza for Baleno and Urban Cruiser for Brezza. Notably, the eVX will not only cater to the Indian market but is also slated for export. Maruti officials have affirmed the eVX’s launch within the financial year 2024-25, with pricing details expected to be disclosed in early 2025.

Maruti Suzuki’s Venture into Electric Vehicles Rahul Bharti, the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, shared insights on this development, stating, “Our EV concept car has already been unveiled. It will be a high-specification SUV with a 550km range and a 60kWh battery.” However, specific production numbers were not disclosed by Bharti.

eVX Pricing Speculations While the pricing for Maruti’s pioneering electric vehicle, the eVX, remains unconfirmed, there are speculations suggesting a price tag exceeding Rs 10 lakh. Given Maruti Suzuki’s stronghold in the affordable petrol-powered car segment, the size and specifications of the eVX position it in a different market segment compared to Tata’s Tiago EV.

Manufacturing Location for eVX Both the upcoming eVX and its Toyota counterpart will roll off the assembly lines at Suzuki Motor’s Gujarat facility in Hansalpur, approximately 90 km from Ahmedabad, as per the ACI report. Suzuki Motor’s Gujarat (SMG) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki India, boasting an operational capacity of 750,000 units annually since its establishment in 2017. The facility has been instrumental in manufacturing popular models like the Baleno, Swift, DZire, and Fronx.

eVX Platform and Dimensions The eVX and its Toyota version will be constructed on Toyota’s 27PL skateboard platform, offering insights into the potential development of more mass-market electric cars in the future, according to ACI. With a length of 4.3 meters, the eVX SUV is anticipated to provide spacious cabin interiors due to its born-EV architecture. Maruti is reportedly conducting road tests for the eVX on Indian roads as part of its pre-launch preparations.
