Adani Stocks Soar Up to 10% Amid Hopes of U.S. Bribery Case Dismissal

In a dramatic turnaround, some Adani Group shares saw a steep rise in Monday’s trading session, with intraday gains of as much as 10%. The leaders were key players like Adani Enterprises, Adani Green Energy, and Adani Ports, which attracted the attention of retail and institutional investors.

The sudden rally appears to be linked to reports that aides of Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani recently met with officials from the United States government. According to a Bloomberg report, the meetings were aimed at urging the dismissal of criminal charges against Adani and several top executives in connection with a long-running overseas bribery investigation. While Mint has not independently verified these claims, the report has already had a noticeable impact on market sentiment.

Background: The Bribery Allegations
The roots of the case lie in November 2024, when Gautam Adani and seven other top group executives were indicted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York. The charges claimed a “years-long scheme” that involved bribing Indian officials to win favorable contracts and shape policymaking. The case attracted significant worldwide attention and triggered greater scrutiny of Adani Group’s global operations, especially in the energy and infrastructure businesses.

These charges were especially hurtful at the time, following the Hindenburg Research report in early 2023, which had accused the conglomerate of accounting fraud and stock manipulation. Although the group vehemently denied those allegations and has since launched a reputational recovery effort, the U.S. indictment rekindled concerns over governance at India’s second-largest conglomerate.

What Triggered Monday’s Rally?
The decisive surge on May 5 was triggered by optimistic sentiments in the market that the criminal case within the U.S. might be shelved. According to Bloomberg, the indication came after the Adani team and top assistants indicated that they had approached the members of former U.S. president Donald Trump’s administration amid ongoing political issues after the elections of 2024. Although no word has been received from the U.S. government or the Adani Group, the rumor itself was sufficient to generate investor interest.

Adani Enterprises shares went up almost 7% intraday, set to end a three-day slide. Adani Green Energy witnessed an even higher surge, with its shares rising almost 10% intraday. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone rose more than 5%, on account of fresh buying interest and short covering.

Market analysts interpret the move as both short-term momentum and as a possible change of sentiment. “The news—albeit unconfirmed—suggests that the group is in earnest to settle its foreign legal troubles. That’s a confidence builder for investors,” stated Axis Securities Senior Analyst Richa Mahajan.

A Pattern of Recovery
This is not the first time Adani Group shares have recovered after adverse news. In the months following the Hindenburg report, shares in the conglomerate were pummeled, losing billions of dollars in market value. But a number of counters made a robust recovery in the second half of 2023 and early 2024, courtesy of strategic investments, debt recast, and policy tailwinds in India’s renewable energy and infrastructure space.

Monday’s price action indicates that investors are still sensitive to geopolitical and legal events impacting the conglomerate, especially in the U.S. market, where Adani is gradually expanding its footprint in the energy sector.

Looking Ahead
Though the rally has provided short-term relief, it also generates concerns regarding the long-term impact of the U.S. indictment. Even if the charges are deferred or dropped, the incident highlights the exposure Indian multinational companies have in foreign jurisdictions. Additionally, the absence of an official word from the Adani Group could maintain volatility in the upcoming sessions.

For now, the market seems to be betting on a favorable outcome, with hopes that Gautam Adani’s team will manage to steer through the turbulence once again. Investors will be closely watching for any official confirmation from U.S. or Indian authorities in the coming days.
