While U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reaffirmed the central bank’s focus on containing inflation and signaled no immediate rate cuts, Asia-Pacific markets saw a broad rally Wednesday as investors considered the potential economic impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.42%, closing at 38,963.70 after reopening post-holiday, while the Topix stayed flat at 2,733.33. South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.37% to 2,548.39, while the small-cap Kosdaq fell 0.59% to 745.18. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index surged 2.41% in late trading, and mainland China’s CSI 300 advanced 0.95% to 3,919.86.

As of 1:30 p.m. local time, the BSE Sensex was trading flat and the Nifty 50 was up 0.19% ahead of India’s January inflation data announcement. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200, meanwhile, closed the day at 8,535.30, up 0.6%.

Trump’s Tariff Policies’ Effects

As President Trump continues to impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners, which may have an impact on supply chains throughout Asia, investors are still wary. The financial markets have responded differently to the ambiguity surrounding these initiatives. Costs are predicted to rise in some industries, such technology and the automobile sector, while local companies might be less affected.

The Federal Reserve’s Interest Rate Position

Powell’s testimony coincides with Washington’s political unpredictability. He reiterated that the Fed funds rate’s current range of 4.25 to 4.5% provides flexibility in addressing inflationary concerns. Rates were left steady by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) during its late-January meeting, indicating a cautious assessment of the state of the economy.

Miss SoftBank’s Earnings

SoftBank Group’s third-quarter net loss of 369.17 billion yen ($2.4 billion) was unexpected and below experts’ projections. In stark contrast to the 298.53 billion yen profit that LSEG analysts had predicted, the company’s Vision Fund investments led to the loss. The shares of SoftBank became more volatile as a result of the earnings shortfall.

Performance on Wall Street

Overnight, the three main stock indices in the United States closed the day in a mixed state. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 123.24 points (0.28%) to 44,593.65, the S&P 500 increased 0.03% to 6,068.50, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.36% to 19,643.86. Investors are keeping a close eye on the Federal Reserve’s economic signals and inflation data to predict the direction of the market.

Prospects for the Asia-Pacific Markets

Investors in the Asia-Pacific region are preparing for possible volatility due to ongoing inflation fears and impending geopolitical risks. External risks from U.S. policy decisions continue to be a major influence, even though some economies continue to benefit from robust domestic consumption and government stimulus measures.
