International markets continue to grapple with uncertainty amid concerns over inflation, geopolitical tensions, and fluctuation in US Federal Reserve policy expectations. Despite sell-offs in several advanced economies, Indian equities have shown remarkable resilience. The NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex both opened strong and maintained upward momentum, reflecting renewed investor confidence.
“India has become an anchor of stability for global investors,” said Vivek Mittal, Chief Market Strategist at Ashwin Securities, in an interview with CNBC-TV18. “With strong GDP growth and corporate earnings resilience, Indian markets are increasingly viewed as a safe haven within the emerging market basket.”
Domestic Catalysts Fuel Bullish Outlook
Strong Economic Fundamentals
India’s economy is expected to grow by over 7% this fiscal year, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Key domestic sectors, including banking, IT, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), are outperforming regional peers.
Recent GDP data shows quarter-on-quarter expansion, led by consumer demand and infrastructure investment.
The rupee has stabilized against major currencies, further supporting capital inflows.
Resilient Corporate Earnings
A recent report from Motilal Oswal Financial Services highlights that over 80% of Nifty 50 firms exceeded Q4 earnings expectations. This outperformance, analysts say, is fueling confidence among both domestic and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs).
“The Indian earnings cycle is entering a sweet spot,” said Shweta Rao, Equity Strategist at Motilal Oswal. “Valuations remain reasonable relative to earnings growth, and that sets the stage for further upside.”
Foreign Portfolio Inflows Surge
FPIs turned net buyers in June, reversing the outflows seen in preceding months amid global risk aversion. According to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), net FPI inflows since June 1 have crossed $2.1 billion, buoyed by optimism over India’s macroeconomic prospects and relative political stability post-election.
Sandeep Mathur, Head of Research at Axis Securities, attributes the trend to an “asset allocation shift towards growth economies with stable governance and improving credit ratings, and India stands out on all fronts.”
Sector-wise Winners and Market Movers
IT and Banking Sectors Lead Gains
Amid global tech rally volatility, Indian IT stocks—particularly Infosys, TCS, and HCL Tech—posted strong gains, benefiting from long-term business momentum and favorable rupee trends. Banking stocks, especially private sector leaders such as HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, also outperformed, driven by robust loan growth and asset quality improvements.
Small and Mid-Cap Resilience
Small- and mid-cap indices have outpaced large-cap counterparts over the past month, reflecting broad participation. “Retail investors continue to show strong confidence in midcaps, underpinned by steady earnings and robust management commentary,” said market analyst Pranjal Kamra.
Global Risks Remain, But India Relatively Shielded
Despite India’s current bullish phase, market experts caution that global headwinds—such as a potential further rate hike by the US Fed, uncertainties over crude oil prices, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts—could introduce volatility.
According to a recent briefing by Kotak Institutional Equities, “Indian equities have historically exhibited relative resilience, but investors should brace for sectoral rotations and short-term choppiness in response to overseas shocks.”
Investor Sentiment and Outlook
Indian Mutual Funds have seen continuous inflows into equity schemes for the 39th consecutive month, a strong testament to persistent domestic optimism. Meanwhile, advisory platforms are urging investors to remain diversified and vigilant amid evolving global developments.
“We advise investors to focus on high-quality stocks with structural growth stories,” recommends Ruchita Maheshwari, Investment Analyst at Nirmal Bang. “The momentum is positive, but valuations necessitate selectivity as well.”
