Gold Set for Worst Week in Over 2 Months as U.S. Jobs Report Looms

Precious Metals Slip Amid Easing Trade Tensions and Global Uncertainty

Gold prices are heading for their sharpest weekly drop in more than two months, as global investors grow cautious ahead of the U.S. non-farm payrolls report. With trade tensions between the U.S. and China easing and market focus shifting to upcoming economic data, safe-haven demand for gold has waned sharply.

Let’s dive into the key reasons behind this price slump and what lies ahead for gold investors.

Gold Price Update: How Far Has It Fallen

Spot and Futures Movement

  • Spot gold remained steady at $3,240.34 per ounce in early trading (as of 0020 GMT on Friday).

  • So far this week, gold has dropped more than 2%, marking its worst performance since late February.

  • U.S. gold futures, however, showed a slight recovery, rising 0.8% to $3,248.80.

This week’s decline is largely attributed to investors pulling out of safe-haven assets as signs of improved geopolitical dialogue emerge.

What’s Moving the Market? Key Factors Behind Gold’s Drop

1. US-China Trade Dialogue Back in Play

According to Chinese state-affiliated media, the United States has approached China to discuss President Donald Trump’s proposed 145% tariffs. While the talks are at an early stage, this sign of potential diplomatic thawing has reduced immediate concerns, weakening gold’s safe-haven appeal.

2. Trump’s Cabinet Shake-Up Adds Intrigue

In a surprising move, Trump fired National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as interim replacement. While not directly linked to monetary policy, such political shifts inject uncertainty—though markets seemed to absorb this without much volatility.

The Big Event: U.S. Non-Farm Payrolls Report

What Are Investors Expecting

  • The U.S. April jobs report is expected to show 130,000 new jobs added, following a strong March figure of 228,000, according to a Reuters poll.

  • The unemployment rate is forecast to remain unchanged at 4.2%.

  • Wages, labor force participation, and job quality will also be closely watched.

Why It Matters for Gold

The U.S. Federal Reserve tracks job growth and wage inflation closely when setting interest rates. A strong jobs report could strengthen the case for higher interest rates, which typically hurts gold because it doesn’t yield interest like bonds or savings.

Global Market Conditions: A Mixed Bag

1. China on Holiday

Chinese markets remain closed for the Labour Day holiday (May 1–5), limiting trading volumes and global liquidity. Markets will resume on May 6.

2. Precious Metals Performance

While gold stumbles, other precious metals showed modest gains:

  • Silver rose 0.2% to $32.47 an ounce

  • Platinum climbed 0.8% to $966.08

  • Palladium gained 0.3% to $943.50

These gains indicate broader investor confidence in industrial demand, especially for silver and platinum, which are used in electronics and manufacturing.

 Key Economic Events Ahead

Friday (May 2) Global Data Calendar (All times GMT)

  • 0750 – France April Manufacturing PMI

  • 0755 – Germany April Manufacturing PMI

  • 0800 – EU Manufacturing Final PMI

  • 0900 – EU Inflation (HICP) and Unemployment Rate

  • 1230 – U.S. Non-Farm Payrolls & Unemployment Data

  • 1400 – U.S. Factory Orders for March

All eyes are on the 12:30 GMT release of the U.S. job data, which will shape not just gold, but the broader direction of equity and commodity markets.

  What Should Investors Do Now?

Caution Is Key

Experts suggest holding off on aggressive gold buying until the U.S. jobs report and Fed signals become clearer. With global uncertainties still in play—from U.S. politics to China’s economic reopening—the gold market could swing either way in coming weeks.

Long-Term View Remains Bullish

Despite this week’s drop, many analysts maintain a positive long-term outlook for gold, especially if central banks continue accumulating reserves and geopolitical tensions rise again.

Gold prices are under pressure, down over 2% this week, marking their worst weekly fall in over two months. With easing trade fears, U.S. jobs data pending, and Trump’s political reshuffles stirring the pot, investors are watching closely.

Friday’s U.S. payroll report could be the turning point for gold’s short-term trend.
