The Indian share market witnessed a fierce selloff on Friday, April 25, as the benchmark indices plunged sharply, erasing huge investor wealth. Sensex plummeted close to 600 points, while the Nifty 50 dropped more than 200 points, extending the losses for the second straight session and indicating increased nervousness amongst investors.

The Sensex closed the day at 79,212.53, losing 589 points or 0.74 per cent, and the Nifty 50 closed at 24,039.35, down 207 points or 0.86 per cent. The selloff during the day was even more severe, with the Sensex falling nearly 1,200 points intraday, a low of 78,606 before some recovery towards the close.

The carnage was not restricted to bluechip stocks. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices plunged even more, tumbling over 3 per cent intraday before closing down 2.44 per cent and 2.56 per cent, respectively.

The sudden drop depleted investor wealth tremendously. The aggregate market capitalization of the listed companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) declined by a whopping ₹9 lakh crore in one session from the level of about ₹430 lakh crore to ₹421 lakh crore.
While having largely encouraging world signals, the Indian stock market saw heavy selling pressure owing to a mix of domestic reasons. Here’s why the meltdown occurred:

Profit Booking at Record Highs
Both Sensex and Nifty 50 had been scaling new heights in the last couple of weeks. Such a high rally followed by profit booking was anybody’s call. Institutional investors, in particular, chose to book gains before the weekend, leading to a widespread selloff. Sectoral heavyweights were under pressure, taking the indices down.

Valuation Concerns
Market experts have repeatedly raised red flags about the stretched valuations of Indian equities compared to historical averages. Even though earnings growth has been strong, the market had priced in a lot of optimism, leaving little room for error. When valuations appear unsustainable, even a minor trigger can cause a sharp correction, as seen today.

Domestic Liquidity Crunch
There were recent indications of tightening conditions in domestic liquidity in the financial system. Increases in short-term interest rates and modest hardening in bond yields indicated that liquidity was being squeezed. Tight liquidity negatively affects market sentiment, which reduces the risk appetite of traders and investors.

Weakness in Broader Markets
While the frontline indices had been holding up, the broader markets — Midcaps and Smallcaps — were already weakening in the last few sessions. Today’s steep decline in Midcap and Smallcap indices reinforced that investors are becoming risk-averse and want to unwind more risky bets first.

Margin Pressure and F&O Expiry Impact
April 25 also saw the monthly expiry of derivatives (F&O expiry). It is common for traders to wind up their positions before expiry, and with nervousness prevailing, aggressive unwinding was witnessed in all segments. Margin pressure on leveraged positions fueled the sell-off during intraday trading.

Global Cues Amid US Rally
Worldwide, markets were generally upbeat following the Nasdaq and S&P 500’s overnight strong gains, as rumors that the Trump administration would roll back tariffs on Chinese imports supported them. Indian investors, however, appeared to have discounted those signals, with domestic issues instead dominating their attention.

Interestingly, regional peers like Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi saw gains of more than 1 per cent, further emphasizing the fact that today’s crash was more India-specific than indicative of a global trend.

    Which were the hardest-hit sectors?
Nearly all sectors closed in the negative, but the suffering was most evident in:

Real Estate: The sector suffered on the back of high valuations and liquidity fears.

Banks and Financials: Most susceptible to liquidity tightening.

Metals: Following a steep rally, metal stocks witnessed profit booking.

IT and FMCG: Relatively defensive segments also witnessed selling, indicating widespread fear.

Market leaders such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Infosys, and TCS dragged the benchmarks down.

    What should investors do now?
Market veterans recommend serenity during such periods. Short-term corrections are inevitable, particularly after extended rallies. Analysts recommend that long-term investors need not panic and should utilize sharp dips to buy quality stocks in a phased manner.

Caution is, however, necessary, particularly in larger markets where excessive valuations and liquidity issues can continue to bear down.

Risk reduction and asset diversification continue to be important tactics in such turbulence. The pros advise staying invested in fundamentally solid businesses and sidestepping leveraged gambles in the near future.

The current crash in the stock market is a reminder that corrections are the nature of market cycles, particularly when valuations have gone up too quickly. Although the steep decline erased ₹9 lakh crore of investor wealth in one day, market analysts point out that India’s medium-term growth story remains intact.

For long-term investors, the current crash can be viewed as a chance rather than an excuse to panic. Selective stock selection and disciplined investing, however, will be essential as markets work through valuation issues and tightening liquidity conditions.
