Gold Prices Tumble Rs 1,350 to Rs 93,000 per 10g After 5-Day Rally

Gold, after reaching record highs, snapped its five-day winning streak and plunged more than 1% on Friday, sending ripples across global markets. The sudden drop came after China’s retaliation against the United States’ new tariffs, sparking a wider market sell-off and raising fears of a global economic downturn.

 Gold Market Snapshot

  • Gold (Spot Price): Down 1.2%, now at $3,075.50/oz

  • Previous High: $3,167.57/oz (Thursday)

  • US Gold Futures: Down 0.9%, now at $3,093.30/oz

  • India Price: Down by ₹1,350, currently at ₹93,000 per 10g

 Why Did Gold Prices Fall?

The major reason behind this sudden drop is geopolitical tension — particularly the escalating trade war between China and the US.

China’s Big Move

China’s finance ministry announced 34% additional tariffs on all US goods starting April 10, in retaliation to new levies introduced by US President Donald Trump.

This triggered a panic wave across global stock markets, forcing investors to liquidate gold holdings to cover losses in other asset classes.

What Analysts Are Saying

“Investors are selling gold to cover losses elsewhere due to margin calls,” said analysts monitoring the situation.

This kind of behavior is common during high-volatility phases when traders start pulling out money from one asset to balance another.

Will Gold Prices Go Back Up?

Even though gold saw a sharp fall, experts remain optimistic about its long-term trajectory.

“We still see scope for further upside risks, given the current risk-off environment,” said Suki Cooper, analyst at Standard Chartered Bank.

According to the bank’s forecast, gold prices could reach $3,300/oz in Q2 2025, considering the global uncertainties and market fears.

Stock Market Crashes Again: What It Means for Gold

The global stock markets fell for the second consecutive day, deepening investor worries.

This environment is usually favorable for gold, which is considered a safe-haven asset, especially during economic uncertainties and political instability.

US Jobs Data Adds to the Mix

The US Labor Department reported:

  • 228,000 jobs added in March (vs. 135,000 expected)

  • Unemployment rate at 4.2% (slightly higher than the 4.1% expected)

Impact on Federal Reserve Policy

“These numbers might delay interest rate cuts from the Fed,” said Alex Ebkarian, COO at Allegiance Gold.

Higher job growth reduces urgency for the US central bank to cut interest rates — which is not ideal for gold, as it typically thrives in a low-interest-rate environment.

What’s Next? All Eyes on Jerome Powell

Investors are now waiting for US Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s speech, expected later today, for insights on future monetary policy and potential interest rate decisions.

The market currently expects the Fed to cut interest rates by up to 120 basis points by the end of the year, starting June 2025.

A dovish stance could send gold prices soaring again, while a hawkish stance might pull it down further.

Silver, Platinum, and Palladium Also Slide

It wasn’t just gold that took a hit — precious metals across the board dipped:

  • Silver: Fell 3.7%, now at $30.70/oz (worst week since Sept 2020)

  • Platinum: Down 2.9%, at $925.06/oz

  • Palladium: Down 1.3%, at $915.80/oz

 Should You Buy Gold Now?

With prices dropping, many investors are wondering — is it time to buy?

Experts suggest caution, but not panic. While the short-term dip may continue due to external factors, the long-term outlook remains bullish, especially if:

  • The Fed confirms upcoming rate cuts

  • Global recession fears grow

  • Geopolitical tensions remain high

The recent fall in gold prices is a reaction to global economic jitters — not a sign of weakness in gold itself. If you’re an investor, keep an eye on global events, especially:

  • US-China trade war updates

  • Federal Reserve interest rate decisions

  • Jerome Powell’s upcoming speech

  • Global stock market performance

Despite short-term volatility, gold remains one of the most trusted safe-haven assets, and many analysts still believe it will break new records in the coming months.
