Gold Prices Soar to Record Highs – Is It Time to Ditch Stocks
Gold Prices Soar as Investors Flock to ETFs Amid Political Uncertainty
Why Are Investors Moving to Gold?
Gold prices have skyrocketed to new records as investors seek refuge from economic and political uncertainty, largely fueled by policies under the current U.S. administration. The surge in demand for gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) is now driving a historic rally in the precious metal market.
Since U.S. President Donald Trump assumed office in January 2025, his administration’s radical policy shifts—including trade tariffs, unconventional diplomatic approaches, and discussions about annexing Greenland—have fueled market instability. This has pushed gold prices up by 14% in 2025 alone, following a 27% increase in 2024.
Gold Hits Historic $3,000 Milestone
On Friday, gold reached an all-time high of $3,004.86 per ounce, marking a significant milestone in its rally. The sharp increase is largely due to investors, both in Europe and the U.S., shifting their portfolios away from stocks and into safer assets like gold.
ETF Inflows Signal Strong Market Demand
Gold-backed ETFs have seen substantial inflows, with European-listed funds increasing holdings by 46.7 metric tonnes (a 3.6% rise), bringing the total to 1,334.3 tonnes since the beginning of the year. This marks a sharp contrast to previous years (2021-2024), which saw significant outflows from these funds, according to the World Gold Council (WGC).
Why Are Investors Choosing Gold Over Stocks?
Investors traditionally favor stocks, but recent market volatility has led many to reconsider their strategies. According to Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, the 2022 Federal Reserve interest rate hikes initially drove investors away from gold. However, as stock markets now show signs of distress, gold is once again in favor.
Key Reasons for the Shift:
- Stock Market Sell-Offs: The S&P 500 recorded its biggest drop of the year on Monday, sparking concerns among U.S. investors.
- Lower Interest Rate Expectations: Analysts predict future Federal Reserve rate cuts, making gold a more attractive investment.
- Economic and Political Instability: Uncertain global conditions make gold a preferred safe-haven asset.
Gold Investment Trends in the U.S. and Europe
European investors were the first movers into gold ETFs, but the recent market downturn has now drawn American investors into the gold rush as well.
U.S. Gold ETF Holdings Surge
In the U.S., gold holdings in ETFs have grown by 68.1 tonnes (4.3% increase) to reach 1,649.8 tonnes this year. While European investors are known for their preference for gold during economic downturns, American investors have now followed suit.
Retail Investors and Physical Gold Demand
Beyond ETFs, retail investors are also piling into gold, increasing demand for physical bars and coins.
- Online gold market BullionVault reported a spike in new investors in February, marking the highest level since May 2021.
- Net investor demand exceeded 0.2 tonnes, the strongest since June 2023.
- Germany has led demand for physical gold bars and coins, rebounding from a recent slump.
Will Gold Prices Stay Above $3,000?
Despite strong demand, analysts warn that gold may struggle to stay above $3,000 per ounce unless further support comes from:
- Retail Investors Buying More Gold in Europe & North America
- Increased Central Bank Purchases
John Reade, Senior Market Strategist at the WGC, noted that gold’s rally could continue if demand for physical gold bars and coins remains strong.
Is Now the Time to Invest in Gold?
With ongoing political and economic uncertainty, gold remains a top choice for risk-averse investors. The rise in gold ETFs, physical gold purchases, and market instability suggests that the precious metal’s rally is far from over. Whether gold will continue its climb beyond $3,000 or stabilize at current levels depends on investor sentiment and future economic developments.
