India to Train 4.2 Million People in Next 5 Years Under 19 Govt Schemes

The Indian government is embarking on an ambitious mission to skill over 4.2 million people in the next five years under 19 different central government schemes. This massive skill development initiative, spread across 15 ministries, aims to create a future-ready workforce to meet both domestic and global demand.

According to an internal government document, the training will be primarily led by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in collaboration with various other ministries. The initiative will not only address India’s employment challenges but also equip workers with the skills required for emerging technologies and industries.

PM Vishwakarma Scheme to Lead the Way

Among the 19 schemes, the PM Vishwakarma scheme will play the most significant role, training nearly 3 million candidates by 2027-28. This initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), will focus on enhancing traditional and artisanal skills.

National Green Hydrogen Mission: A Game Changer

Another major contributor is the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to train 1.16 million individuals by 2029-30. This program, spearheaded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will prepare a workforce specializing in green energy solutions—a sector poised for exponential growth.

Largest Multi-Ministry Skill Convergence

A senior government official described this initiative as “the biggest convergence program between different ministries.” The objective is to fast-track skill development for new-age technologies while ensuring the seamless implementation of government schemes.

Each scheme will have specially designed targeted courses delivered in a time-bound manner under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).

How the Training Will Be Funded

The funding for these training programs will come from both the Skill Development Ministry and the respective ministries handling the schemes. The contribution split varies from project to project, ensuring that training is tailored to each industry’s specific requirements.

More Than 4.5 Million Could Benefit!

While the official target is 4.2 million, the actual number of trained candidates could surpass 4.5 million as demand assessments continue for 11 out of the 19 schemes. Most of these are smaller programs, but their combined impact could be substantial.

Government’s Commitment to Skill India

To support this mission, the Union Cabinet approved ₹8,800 crore for the Skill India Programme (2022-23 to 2025-26). A significant ₹6,000 crore of this budget has been allocated for PMKVY 4.0, which will focus on industry-aligned training across the country.

Why This Matters?

  1. Bridging the Skill Gap: This initiative will help India create a highly skilled workforce for emerging industries like green energy, digital technology, and MSMEs.
  2. Boosting Employment: By providing industry-relevant skills, this initiative increases employability for millions.
  3. Global Demand: India can become a global talent hub by skilling workers in high-demand sectors.
  4. Economic Growth: A well-trained workforce will enhance productivity and innovation, contributing to India’s economic progress.

With over 4.2 million people set to be trained, the government’s multi-ministry skill development initiative is a game changer for India’s workforce. By focusing on emerging industries and aligning training with global standards, India is positioning itself as a leader in the future of work.

If you’re looking to upgrade your skills and enhance your career opportunities, now is the time to explore the various government-backed skill training programs
