Hong Kong Jewellery Exports Drop Again in January 2025

Hong Kong’s jewellery export sector continues to struggle, with the latest figures showing a persistent downward trend. The global jewellery trade remains under pressure, and Hong Kong’s gold and silver product shipments reflect this ongoing challenge.

Declining Exports and Imports

According to the latest data from Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department, exports of jewellery, goldsmiths’, and silversmiths’ wares fell by 4.8% year-on-year in January 2025. The downward trend extended over the November 2024 to January 2025 period, with an 8.4% decline compared to the previous quarter.

The situation wasn’t any better for imports in this category, which dropped 9.6% year-on-year in January and followed a similar downward trajectory from November 2024 to January 2025.

A Tough End to 2024 for Hong Kong’s Jewellery Market

The jewellery export sector in Hong Kong closed 2024 on a disappointing note, recording a 4.4% decrease in total exports from January to December 2024. December alone saw an 8.3% decline, reinforcing concerns about the industry’s struggles in a highly competitive and uncertain global market.

Slight Growth in Overall Exports

Despite the jewellery sector’s struggles, Hong Kong’s total exports showed a 0.1% uptick in January 2025. This marginal improvement was attributed to strong shipments to the United States and Asia. However, exports to the European Union continued to decline, reflecting ongoing economic challenges and shifting trade dynamics in the region.

Factors Affecting the Jewellery Export Decline

Several factors contribute to Hong Kong’s declining jewellery exports, including:

1. Trade Protectionism and Global Uncertainty

The rise in trade barriers and protectionist policies worldwide continues to impact international trade. Hong Kong’s export-driven economy has felt the effects, especially in industries that rely on global demand, such as jewellery.

2. Economic Slowdown in Key Markets

Demand for luxury items like gold and silver jewellery has weakened in various markets due to economic slowdowns, particularly in Europe. Reduced consumer spending power has led to a decline in exports.

3. Competitive Pressure from Other Markets

Other major jewellery hubs, such as India and China, continue to strengthen their presence in the global market. Lower production costs and aggressive marketing strategies make it challenging for Hong Kong-based exporters to maintain their market share.

Future Outlook: What Lies Ahead?

The Hong Kong government remains cautiously optimistic about future export performance. While external factors, such as trade disputes and economic fluctuations, pose challenges, steady global economic growth and China’s economic stimulus measures may provide some support to Hong Kong’s struggling jewellery sector.

The jewellery industry’s recovery will likely depend on:

  • Increased demand from major global markets
  • Adaptation to new trade regulations and economic shifts
  • Enhancing competitiveness through innovation and value-added services

Hong Kong’s jewellery export industry continues to navigate a difficult landscape, with declining figures reflecting broader global economic concerns. While total exports showed a minor increase, the jewellery sector remains vulnerable to global trade disruptions and shifting consumer demand.

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Hong Kong can regain momentum or if the jewellery industry’s struggles will persist.
