Muthoot Finance Share Price Slumps as RBI Tightens Gold Loan Rules

Muthoot Finance, India’s largest gold loan company, is facing intense selling pressure after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) proposed strict new regulations on gold-backed lending.

On Friday, Muthoot Finance shares fell another 8%, hitting ₹1,964.35 intraday on the BSE. That brings the total two-day loss to 14%, or roughly ₹480 per share, in a broader market that remained positive.

This sharp decline follows the RBI’s announcement on April 9, 2025, where the central bank laid out uniform gold loan regulations to bring transparency and control to this fast-growing lending segment.

 What Did the RBI Announce?

The RBI’s new draft circular aims to standardize how gold loans are offered across all financial institutions.

 Key Regulatory Changes:

  • Loan-to-Value (LTV) cap fixed at 75% across all institutions.

  • Bullet repayment loans (lump-sum repayment at maturity) must maintain 75% LTV till the end.

  • If LTV breaches 75% for over 30 days, lenders must provision an extra 1%.

  • Loans cannot be renewed if LTV remains breached at maturity.

  • Loans meant for income generation must be tracked and categorized properly.

  • Lenders must monitor usage of funds and maintain documentation.

These changes aim to reduce risk, improve oversight, and ensure responsible lending in the booming gold loan sector.

 Muthoot Finance Share Performance

Date Closing Price Change
April 9 ₹2,444.65 (52-week high) —
April 10 ₹2,138.65 ▼12.5%
April 11 ₹1,964.35 (intraday low) ▼8%

As of 11:49 AM on April 11, the stock was trading at ₹2,021.65, down 5.53% from the previous day.

The stock has seen heavy volumes, with nearly 1 million shares traded across NSE and BSE by mid-day. This indicates panic selling and possibly institutional exit.

Why Muthoot is the Most Impacted

Muthoot Finance is India’s largest gold loan-focused NBFC, with most of its revenue coming from loans against gold jewellery.

The stricter norms on LTV, usage tracking, and loan renewal directly hit Muthoot’s business model, which was previously flexible and high-margin.

According to ICICI Securities, these new norms could slow the rapid growth in gold lending and pressurize profitability for companies like Muthoot and its peers.

 What Are Analysts Saying?

Despite the sell-off, some experts believe the changes will benefit the sector long-term by:

  • Creating a level playing field across banks and NBFCs

  • Bringing in regulatory discipline

  • Making gold lending more sustainable

However, in the short term, NBFCs like Muthoot may struggle to adjust.

“Harmonisation in gold loan regulations could impact strong growth momentum in the gold loan business, thereby resulting in correction in gold loan NBFCs,” said ICICI Securities.

 Rating Agencies Still Back Muthoot

Interestingly, just days before the crash, both S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Ratings upgraded Muthoot Finance’s long-term issuer ratings, citing:

  • Strong capital position

  • Consistent earnings

  • Leadership in the gold loan space

  • A large, highly collateralized loan book

“The company will maintain excellent capital and earnings over the next 12 months while benefiting from the strengthening regulatory environment,” said S&P Global Ratings.

However, they did mention some asset quality concerns in Muthoot’s microfinance subsidiary, in line with industry-wide trends.

 What Should Investors Do Now?

With shares down nearly 20% from recent highs, should you buy the dip or stay away?

 Reasons to Consider Buying:

  • Fundamentals remain strong

  • High gold prices support collateral value

  • Long-term tailwinds from formalization of credit

  • Regulatory clarity may bring stability later

 Reasons to Wait:

  • Near-term earnings may be hit

  • Regulatory adaptation may take time

  • Sentiment is weak and volatility is high

  • Further downside risk if guidance worsens

Outlook for the Gold Loan Sector

The gold loan market has exploded in recent years due to:

  • High gold prices

  • Easy access to credit

  • Popularity among small borrowers and businesses

RBI’s regulations are likely to filter out riskier practices, boost compliance, and protect borrowers — but this also means tighter margins and stricter lending protocols.

Muthoot and similar NBFCs will need to adapt quickly to maintain growth.

Muthoot Finance’s steep fall is a reaction to changing rules — not crumbling fundamentals. As the RBI aims to clean up the gold loan sector, short-term pain could lead to long-term gain.

Investors should watch for updates from Muthoot on how it plans to comply with the new norms and whether it can preserve margins and loan growth under stricter rules.

This moment may test the resilience of India’s gold lending king — and could create an opportunity for bold long-term investors.
