How a 25-Year-Old Used TikTok to Build a $6.5M Business – Without a Shark Tank Deal!

From College Grad to CEO

At just 25 years old, Charlotte Trecartin turned a simple idea into a booming business. Shortly after graduating from the University of Illinois, she made a bold move—hiring a TikTok coach for $400 a month. Little did she know, that investment would propel her startup, CharCharms, to $6.5 million in revenue in just one year.

The Power of TikTok Marketing

Trecartin didn’t just post randomly; she followed a strategic plan set by her coach. She started posting three times a day, using playlists to organize content and attract specific audiences. Her strategy worked—CharCharms’ TikTok account grew to 80,000 followers, catching the attention of major retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target.

What Is CharCharms?

CharCharms specializes in water bottle accessories—including straws, straw toppers, charms, and pouches. These trendy add-ons help customers personalize their everyday water bottles, making hydration fun and stylish.

Shark Tank: The Big Moment

With her business thriving, Trecartin took CharCharms to ABC’s Shark Tank. She asked for $300,000 in exchange for 10% equity, hoping to find a partner to help scale her company. But not all the Sharks were impressed.

Skepticism and “Crap” Comments

Investor Kevin O’Leary dismissed CharCharms as just another product in a crowded market, saying, “There’s a lot of crap like this on the market.” But guest judge Kendra Scott fired back, questioning his judgment after hearing about CharCharms’ success. “Do you still think it’s crap now, buddy?” she asked.

The Investment Offers: Too Pricey to Accept

While some Sharks were hesitant, O’Leary and Daymond John saw potential. They made offers:

  • O’Leary: $300,000 for 25% equity
  • John: $300,000 for 20% equity

But billionaire Shark Mark Cuban warned that these offers were “predatory.” He pointed out that because CharCharms was already profitable, giving away 20-25% would mean writing investors a check almost immediately.

Walking Away Without a Deal

Trecartin countered, offering 12.5% equity, but the Sharks wouldn’t budge. Even after lowering their asks (O’Leary to 20% and John to 17.5%), they remained above her maximum threshold of 15% equity. She made the tough decision to walk away without a deal.

Success Beyond Shark Tank

Although she didn’t get an investment, the exposure alone boosted CharCharms’ sales. Just four days after the episode aired, revenue skyrocketed, and new retail and licensing opportunities started pouring in.

“I would do it again,” Trecartin said. “I’m actually hoping another brand idea pops into my brain so I can apply [to ‘Shark Tank’] again.”

The Lesson: Bet on Yourself

Trecartin’s journey proves that startups don’t always need big investors to succeed. By leveraging social media marketing and strategic branding, entrepreneurs can build thriving businesses with minimal outside funding. Her story is a testament to the power of self-belief, creativity, and persistence.
