Your Roof Could Soon Make You Rich – Nilekani’s Bold Prediction
The Next UPI? Nandan Nilekani Predicts a Massive Energy Revolution in India
India’s Next Big Disruption: Energy to Drive Millions of Entrepreneurs
Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani believes that India’s next technological revolution will be in energy—transforming the nation just as UPI did for digital payments.
The Next UPI is Energy, Says Nilekani
Speaking at the Arkam Annual Meet’s “The Great Unlock: India in 2035” event, Nilekani highlighted how India is on the brink of a major transformation in energy production, storage, and distribution.
“The next UPI is energy,” Nilekani stated, drawing parallels between India’s digital payment boom and the anticipated rise of decentralized energy systems.
From Consumers to Producers: How Every Home Will Generate Power
Nilekani emphasized how Indians are used to storing energy in small amounts—like LPG cylinders or coal. However, electricity has traditionally been consumed directly from the grid. This is about to change.
“Every home will be an energy producer because they have rooftop solar. Every home will be an energy storer because they have an EV battery. So, every home is a producer, seller, and buyer of energy. You will buy and sell energy just like UPI,” he explained.
This shift will democratize energy production, creating millions of small-scale energy entrepreneurs who can generate and trade power using advanced grid technologies.
Millions of Energy Entrepreneurs to Emerge
Nilekani predicts that India’s energy transformation will fuel an entrepreneurial boom. Just as UPI enabled small merchants to accept digital payments seamlessly, decentralized energy production will allow individuals to generate revenue from surplus electricity.
“It is going to be a huge thing which will create its own set of energy entrepreneurs,” he added.
With rooftop solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) batteries becoming more common, households and businesses will have the ability to store and sell electricity in a manner similar to how digital transactions function today.
The UPI Revolution: A Blueprint for Energy
Launched less than a decade ago, UPI has transformed India’s digital payment landscape, driving over 80% of the country’s digital transactions. This model provides an inspiring framework for the future of energy in India.
Some key insights from the UPI success story that can be applied to energy include:
- Decentralization: Just as UPI allowed small merchants and individuals to participate in digital payments, decentralized energy grids will empower small-scale producers.
- Scalability: UPI scaled rapidly due to government backing and private-sector innovation. A similar approach to energy infrastructure could yield comparable results.
- Ease of Access: The simplicity of UPI transactions made digital payments mainstream. A seamless, app-based platform for energy trading could have the same effect.
India’s Startup Ecosystem to Touch 1 Million by 2035
Currently, India has around 150,000 startups, growing at an annual rate of 20%. Nilekani predicts that by 2035, India will be home to one million startups.
Out of the 2,000 funded startups, over 100 have already reached unicorn status. This explosive growth, fueled by technology, entrepreneurship, and formalization, will accelerate India’s journey toward becoming an $8 trillion economy.
Challenges and Solutions for India’s Growth
Despite the optimistic outlook, Nilekani acknowledged key challenges that could hinder India’s progress:
- Income Inequality: A large portion of India’s wealth is concentrated in land assets.
- Regional Imbalances: Only 13 districts contribute to half of India’s GDP.
- Low Productivity: Without increased efficiency, sustained high growth will be difficult.
To overcome these hurdles, he outlined four key “unlocks” that will drive India’s growth:
- Technology – Innovation in AI, fintech, and renewable energy.
- Capital – More investments in startups and infrastructure.
- Entrepreneurship – Enabling small businesses to thrive.
- Formalization – Bringing more businesses into the organized sector.
A Bright Future for India’s Energy Market
With advancements in solar energy, EV storage, and smart grids, India is on the verge of a major energy revolution. If executed correctly, this shift will create new economic opportunities and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
Just as UPI revolutionized India’s financial ecosystem, decentralized energy systems could redefine how the nation generates and consumes power. The question is: are we ready to embrace this transformation
