Microsoft is gearing up to introduce an ad-supported free tier for Xbox Game Pass, focusing on markets that are not traditionally “console-first.” The move is part of Microsoft’s strategy to make gaming more accessible in regions like Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, where consoles may not be as prevalent.

In a recent interview at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit, Tim Stuart, Microsoft Gaming CFO, hinted at the company’s plans. Stuart mentioned, “For models like Africa, or India, Southeast Asia, maybe places that aren’t console-first, you can say, ‘hey, do you want to watch 30 seconds of an ad and then get two hours of game streaming?'”

This approach aligns with Microsoft’s efforts to expand its gaming services globally and tap into markets where traditional console-based gaming may face challenges. The proposed ad-supported tier is expected to offer a more accessible entry point for gamers who may not have access to high-end gaming consoles.

As of now, Microsoft already provides free cloud streaming for Fortnite, requiring only a Microsoft account. However, specific details about the gaming titles included in the upcoming ad-supported tier remain undisclosed. Reports suggest that the free-tier Xbox Game Pass subscription might include a selection of titles, offering a taste of the gaming experience.

In addition to the ad-supported tier, Microsoft is reportedly exploring the launch of a mobile gaming store. Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox’s video-game division, mentioned during an interview at the CCXP comics and entertainment convention in Brazil that the company is actively working with partners “to see more choice for how they can monetize on the phone.”

The goal is to provide users with more options and flexibility in accessing and enjoying gaming content on their smartphones. While the specific launch date for the mobile gaming store is yet to be revealed, Spencer expressed optimism, stating, “I don’t think this is multiple years away, I think this is sooner than that.”

Microsoft’s strategic moves reflect the evolving landscape of the gaming industry, where accessibility, affordability, and diverse monetization options are becoming increasingly crucial. By introducing an ad-supported free tier and exploring a mobile gaming store, Microsoft aims to cater to a broader audience and make gaming a more inclusive and flexible experience for users around the world. The company’s initiatives also underscore the growing significance of cloud-based gaming services in the global gaming market.
