On Tuesday, private carrier Air India revealed its latest uniform collection, designed by renowned fashion designer Manish Malhotra, for both cabin and cockpit crew members. The introduction of these new uniforms will occur gradually over the coming months, coinciding with the entry of Air India’s first Airbus A350 aircraft, according to a statement from the company.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Air India, expressed confidence that Manish Malhotra’s creative designs would mark an exciting new chapter in the airline’s history. He emphasized the significance of the crew uniforms in aviation history and stated that the new collection perfectly aligns with Air India’s refreshed identity.
The female cabin crew uniform features a ready-to-wear ombre saree adorned with intricate patterns inspired by Indian heritage architecture (jharokha) and the Vista, the new Air India logo icon. Paired with a comfortable blouse and blazer, the attire captures the essence of India’s diverse culture, blending tradition with a modern and sophisticated look.
Manish Malhotra, commenting on his design, stated, “My aim was to create uniforms that capture the essence of India’s diverse culture and traditions while also embodying a modern and sophisticated look.” He expressed his hope that the uniforms, featuring symbolic hues of India, would evoke pride among the crew and leave a lasting impression on guests, reflecting the warmth and hospitality for which India is known.
Air India asserted that the new uniform designs underwent a meticulous development process, involving close collaboration with cabin crew representatives and the airline’s In-flight services team. Extensive testing exercises were conducted to ensure the practicality and appeal of the new designs.
For the cockpit crew, the uniform consists of a classic black double-breasted suit with a print inspired by the Vista, symbolizing professionalism, timelessness, and the gravitas associated with the flying profession.
In addition to the stylish attire, Manish Malhotra has curated footwear that combines style and comfort. The female cabin crew will don dual-tone (black and burgundy) block heels, while the male cabin crew will sport comfortable black Brogues.
