Dai-ichi Life’s joint venture with Capgemini marks a significant step in the insurer’s broader digitalization strategy. According to a press release issued by the companies, the multi-year initiative will initially focus on modernizing Dai-ichi Life’s core insurance platforms, introducing AI-powered customer service solutions, and developing a seamless omnichannel experience for policyholders.

“The insurance sector is at a pivotal point, and digital transformation is becoming an imperative, not a choice,” said Koichiro Watanabe, President and CEO of Dai-ichi Life. “This partnership with Capgemini will help us innovate at speed and scale, delivering greater value to our customers and preparing our business for the future.”

Capgemini, recognized globally for its expertise in digital consulting, technology, and engineering, will provide end-to-end support, including business process reengineering, cloud migration, cybersecurity enhancements, and workforce upskilling.

Key Objectives and Expected Impact

Modernizing Operations and Customer Experience

The initiative’s foremost objective is to improve Dai-ichi Life’s operational efficiency by integrating advanced analytics and automation into its policy management, claims processing, and customer engagement workflows.

“Our program with Dai-ichi Life will modernize legacy systems and unlock the value of data for smarter decision-making,” said Aiman Ezzat, CEO of Capgemini Group. “Together, we are committed to making Dai-ichi Life a digital benchmark in the life insurance industry.”

AI-Powered Customer Service

Another centerpiece of the collaboration is the rollout of artificial intelligence and machine learning tools. These technologies are expected to provide faster, more personalized service to Dai-ichi’s 8 million policyholders by facilitating claims processing, automating customer inquiries, and offering tailored product recommendations.

Recent studies from Celent and McKinsey indicate that Japanese insurers lag behind their global peers in digital adoption, but initiatives like this are expected to narrow the gap and position Dai-ichi Life as an industry leader.

Omnichannel Engagement

The partnership also seeks to create a unified experience across Dai-ichi Life’s digital and physical channels, enabling policyholders to access services anytime, anywhere — a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and changing consumer preferences.

Industry Context and Perspectives

Japanese Life Insurance Market Facing Change

Japan’s life insurance sector, valued at over $300 billion, faces mounting pressures from an aging population, low interest rates, and growing competition from insurtech startups. As a result, industry leaders are under increasing pressure to innovate, streamline their operations, and improve customer engagement.

“Building digital capability is now essential for Japanese life insurers to sustain growth in a competitive market environment,” said Fumiko Matsuo, a senior analyst at Nikkei Asian Review. “Dai-ichi Life’s move signals a broader industry shift toward digital-first strategies.”

Capgemini’s Growing Footprint in Japan

Capgemini has expanded its presence in Japan with several high-profile partnerships in the finance, automotive, and healthcare sectors. With this new initiative, the firm further cements its reputation as a trusted partner for digital transformation in East Asia.

“This deal is a testament to the maturity and ambition of Japan’s insurance sector and Capgemini’s ability to deliver at scale,” commented Tomoyuki Iizuka, Country Head of Capgemini Japan.

Challenges and Future Outlook

While digital initiatives promise significant long-term benefits, industry experts caution that implementation risks remain high due to legacy infrastructure, data privacy regulations, and the need for cultural transformation within traditional organizations.

To mitigate these risks, Dai-ichi Life and Capgemini have established joint governance teams and outlined phased rollouts, starting with pilot projects in Tokyo and expanding nationwide over the next three years.

As part of their commitment to transparency and accountability, both companies have pledged to communicate project milestones and customer impact in future reports.
