the Indian Ministry of Defence’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, cleared projects worth over ₹70,000 crore, with a major emphasis on indigenous unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The approvals include procurement of high-tech drones—both fixed-wing and rotary types—intended for use by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The DAC’s endorsement is a significant component of the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing in the defence sector and reducing dependency on imports.
In a statement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The DAC’s approval for indigenous drone procurement reaffirms our commitment to self-reliance in critical military technologies and will give a substantial push to India’s defence industrial ecosystem.”
IdeaForge Positioned as a Major Beneficiary
IdeaForge, listed on the NSE and BSE, is widely recognized for its advanced drone solutions, including surveillance and reconnaissance drones used by India’s armed forces, paramilitary, and law enforcement agencies. According to market analysts, the Defence Ministry’s decision positions homegrown firms like IdeaForge to clinch substantial contracts in the upcoming bidding process.
“The approval of major drone purchases is a watershed moment for the domestic drone industry. IdeaForge, with its proven expertise and prior defence collaborations, is particularly well-placed to benefit,” said Richa Sharma, defence sector analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services.
Shares of IdeaForge opened at ₹950, up from Friday’s close of ₹865, before settling at ₹975 (+10.6%) by midday trade. Trading volumes also spiked, reflecting robust investor interest.
Market and Industry Impact
Strong Investor Response
The surge in IdeaForge’s share price underscores the market’s confidence in the company’s strong order pipeline and growth prospects in defence applications. The company already holds a dominant share in India’s small drone segment, having supplied over 2,000 drones for national security purposes since its inception.
“IdeaForge’s technical expertise, track record of timely deliveries, and indigenous technology place it in pole position to win government contracts following this MoD approval,” noted Sharat Gupta, portfolio manager at Axis Mutual Fund.
Competitive Landscape and Sector Outlook
India’s domestic drone market has witnessed exponential growth since policy reforms in 2021, which eased restrictions and provided incentives for local manufacturers. While IdeaForge faces competition from other players like Zen Technologies and Paras Aerospace, its certifications and established defence relationships offer a competitive edge.
According to a 2023 report by NITI Aayog, India’s drone sector is expected to reach a valuation of $4 billion by 2027, with substantial demand from defence, agriculture, mining, and infrastructure sectors.
What’s Next for IdeaForge?
With the green light from the Defence Ministry, bidding for the new drone contracts is expected to commence over the next few months. Industry observers anticipate that initial orders could be finalized before the end of 2024.
“We’re optimistic about the opportunities from this policy boost and remain focused on delivering world-class drone solutions tailored for India’s defence needs,” said Ankit Mehta, CEO of IdeaForge, in a statement to CNBC-TV18.
Although the Ministry has not disclosed specific contract values, analysts estimate that defence orders for drones under the current scheme could be worth upwards of ₹1,000 crore annually over the next five years.
Challenges and Considerations
Despite its promising outlook, the domestic drone sector continues to grapple with supply chain constraints, regulatory delays, and the need for rapid technology upgradation to match global standards. Successful execution of defence contracts will depend on IdeaForge’s ability to scale up production and maintain quality benchmarks.
Industry experts also point out that while government orders provide stability and scale, diversification into commercial and international markets will be crucial for long-term revenue growth.
