During the height of the pandemic, SII became a household name. With Covishield (the local version of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine), the company supplied over a billion doses globally, earning record revenues and establishing Adar Poonawalla as a key figure in global healthcare.

However, as global vaccination rates increase and Covid demand normalizes, SII now faces a sharp downturn in orders. The challenge: how to maintain growth after the extraordinary Covid windfall.

“Covid put us on the global map, but we must now pivot to ensure long-term relevance,” Poonawalla said in a recent interview with The Economic Times. “Innovation and diversification are the way forward.”

New Vaccines and Therapeutics in the Pipeline

In the wake of declining Covid vaccine sales, SII has accelerated development of new products:

Malaria & Dengue Vaccines: In partnership with Oxford University and Novavax, SII is scaling up production of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine following major regulatory approvals in Africa and India.

Pneumococcal, HPV, and Flu Shots: Addressing persistent public health needs, SII has expanded its vaccine portfolio to target pneumonia, human papillomavirus, and influenza.

mRNA Technology: SII is investing in next-generation mRNA platforms, aiming to locally manufacture vaccines for a range of diseases and reduce dependence on imports.

Foray Into Biological Drugs and Therapeutics

Poonawalla has also greenlit SII’s entry into the biosimilars and monoclonal antibodies market, leveraging the company’s manufacturing scale.

“India needs high-quality, affordable biologics,” said Suresh Jadhav, SII’s executive director. “Our expansion will help bridge that gap in cancer and auto-immune therapies.”

Betting Big on International Markets

SII is ramping up exports in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East—regions where demand for routine immunization remains high. The company is also building new manufacturing facilities in Nigeria and Kenya, seeking to localize production and mitigate supply chain risks.

“We learned the value of resilient supply chains during the pandemic,” said Poonawalla.

Financial Resilience and Investment

After pandemic profits, SII has invested heavily in R&D, infrastructure, and global partnerships. According to company filings, SII allocated more than $500 million in the past year toward expanding capacity and advancing its research pipeline, twice its pre-pandemic R&D expenditure.

Challenges and Competition Ahead

However, SII faces stiff competition. Global giants like Pfizer, Moderna, and Chinese manufacturers are aggressively pursuing emerging markets. Additionally, vaccine hesitancy and changing public health priorities threaten long-term vaccine sales.

“There’s no question our margins are slimmer now,” Poonawalla acknowledged. “But our scale and speed will be our advantage.”

Leadership and the Poonawalla Legacy

As he positions Serum Institute for a post-Covid future, Adar Poonawalla is blending the legacy of his father, founder Cyrus Poonawalla, with his own vision for global innovation.

“The pandemic proved that healthcare is global, not local,” Poonawalla recently told Bloomberg. “Our focus now is sustainable impact, not just short-term gains.”

Outlook: Reinvention to Sustain Growth

With a nimble leadership style, bold investments in innovation, and a renewed focus on underserved markets, SII aims to remain at the forefront of global vaccines—recapturing not just revenue, but also its reputation as a world leader in affordable healthcare.
